Brighton based photographer Tom Heatley's work represents a wider interest in the practice of research through art, and photography’s relationship to knowledge. Musing on the colour red, he considers the most iconic image of red in photography: the darkroom. The sensitivity of photographic paper in a black and white darkroom necessitates the use of low frequency visible light to be used to illuminate the working space. In other words, the only safe light is red.

"Blood is maybe redder than red, because of it's associations in art and in culture."
Tom Heatley's presentation from PechaKucha Night Bexhill-on-Sea Vol. 1 opens with the most essential image of the colour red in photography: the safe light in a darkroom, and moves through a collection of images and wide ranging associations with blood, danger, sex, sacrifice, socialism and courage.
