Somphonsack 'Toun' Phayouphorn was born in 1978 in Luang Prabang, from where his family fled to Lausanne, Switzerland three years later via a refugee camp on the Thai border. He studied Architecture in Geneva and worked there until 2011, when he visited Laos for the first time again after his family’s departure, with the mission of building a house for family members who decided to move back to Laos. The process awakened his curiosity and entailed a string of other projects, and what was initially planned as a few months abroad unexpectedly turned into the establishment of an architecture office and a new home.
Since then, Toun, his German wife and their Lao team work on projects seeking to defy local and international notions of style and tradition, experimenting with cues, concepts and materials from both cultures. Fueled by the challenge of building on the potential within the extraordinary limitations and freedom encountered in Laos, his journey continues.
