Roos Derks
Volunteer at the Mandril, Urban Gardener, Student of Cultural Sociology and Permaculture
in Maastricht
Netherlands
Driven by practical idealism and self-reliance I am currently the driver of an urban gardening project in the backyard of the Mandril Cultural and Political Center. My academic background is a Liberal Arts bachelor degree and a master degree in Cultural Sociology, which I just completed at the start of this year (2016). Now my focus has shiften into the more concrete - "practice what you preach" - realm. I am driven by the realization that I, and other young people with me, often get stuck on theory and dreaming, while what we need is practice, doing and celebration! Holding spaces for this, both literally and methaphorically, is what I aim to do.

Monkeys Go Green

"The world is abundant. If you’re willing to take leftovers, you can get nearly everything. Just ask for it."
In Monkeys Go Green from PechaKucha Night Maastricht Vol. 30, Roos Derks shares on her urban gardening projects. Starting off on a polluted and neglected old rubber factory terrain, Derks brings us to the political and cultural center of the Mandril in Maastricht. Guided by insights from Social Permaculture, she shows why these type of projects are surprisingly doable, important, and a lot of fun.
This was "PechaKucha of the Day" on Wednesday, August 17th, 2016.
