Professor, Vancouver Island University
Pamela Shaw PhD MCIP RPP FRCGS is the Director of the new Master of Community Planning Program at Vancouver Island University and the Research Director of the Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Region Research Institute. Pam’s current academic research concentrates on social-ecological investigations in coastal communities, and she is also fascinated by the link between the retail landscape and the public good. Both research areas tie to the idea of "living better" on the earth's surface. Pam is a passionate proponent of community-based applied research that involves students in meaningful work: recent projects include an Action Plan for Campbellton, the Toquaht Nation Official Community Plan, and a site review for Lyackson First Nation. Pam recently published an article with Alanna Mitchell and Devon Miller on the K’omox First Nation’s Comprehensive Community Plan in Plan Canada, published her first textbook “A Field Guide to Communication” with Oxford University Press in 2009, and her second book “Boxed In: Searching for the Public Good in Urban Planning” will be published in late 2015.
