Murat Ates

Writer, The Athletic in Winnipeg Canada

Murat Ates blends modern hockey analysis with engaging storytelling as the Winnipeg Jets beat writer for The Athletic. Known for his thoughtful questioning, Murat weaves data-driven hockey strategy and deep insight from Jets players together with strong writing, humour, and sharp analysis. On one of Murat's particularly insightful days this past season, Jets head coach Paul Maurice threatened to steal his laptop. A proud Manitoban, Murat regularly appears on TSN 1290 in Winnipeg and on podcasts throughout Canada and the United States.

The beginning of the path Murat Ates has taken to become a Winnipeg Jets beat writer for the Athletic can be traced to two generations before him. Murat shares this personal story of how his family and upbringing influenced the trajectory of his profession in this compelling 20x20 talk. Listen in to hear him trace the line from being (jokingly) threatened by head coach Paul Maurice to his family members and his education, and back again.

Murat's talk was recorded live at PechaKucha Night Winnipeg Vol. 38, on June 6 2019, at the Park Theatre.
