Mary Elizabeth Cantú earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Museum Education with a focus on Cultural Anthropology & Education in 2001 from Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts. She went on to obtain a state certificate for General Elementary Education in 2003. Cantú furthered her education getting a Master’s Degree in Art Education in 2008, with a focus on Community-Based Art from the University of Texas at Austin. In 2013, she became a national Reuse Alliance Master Reuser, the first in San Antonio. Philanthropy, art, education, and green living have always been important to Cantú. All of these values amalgamated in 2010 when she founded spare parts, an organization dedicated to: cultural and environmental sustainability; affordability and accessibility to the arts; and community, education, green-style. Its main objective is to connect with various agencies and businesses to provide a steady supply of materials, which would otherwise be thrown away, for the artistic community and educators to increase the creative and cultural energy of San Antonio.
