The Yin and Yang of it…
"The Yin and Yang of It" looks at Karen Farrell’s choice to leave a highly successful corporate career in the Australian media industry for a path as a full-time yoga teacher and studio owner … The Yin and Yang of It criss-crosses the globe to India – the original birthplace of yoga - to trace the roots of this ancient science and examines the modern-day meaning (and message) of yoga with its soaring popularity in the West...
Karen Farrell, Yoga Avenue Principal Teacher and Studio Owner, has been practicing yoga for 13 years, since she fell pregnant with her beautiful son, Oscar. Her much-loved aunt, Veronica Barnsen, who is also a yoga teacher and yoga practitioner of 45 years, introduced Karen to yoga in 2001… Karen is particularly proud of her yoga lineage.
Over a decade ago, Karen completed a Diploma of Teacher Training with Qi Natural Therapies & Yoga, Sydney. The 1-year Teacher Training covered Yoga Philosophy, Ethics, Anatomy & Physiology, Yogic Physiology, Asana Sequencing, Teaching Methodology and Lifestyle, as well as Integrated Practice and Teaching. The Diploma is among the most respected Diploma’s in Australia.
In 2013, Karen travelled to California, gaining a specialist Yoga for Surfers accreditation with YFS founder, Peggy Hall. In addition to teaching a number of different yoga styles, Karen designs and implements yoga courses to specifically assist surfers and board riders (bodyboarders / skate boarders / SUP-ers). The courses are designed to increase core power, flexibility and strength and to improve balance and coordination. Karen is the only Yoga for Surfers Certified Instructor on the Mid-North Coast of NSW.
Recently, Karen added to her Teacher Training credits when she visited Singapore to undertake a 5-day Teacher Training Immersion with Byran Kest, one of the world’s most revered and coveted yoga teachers. Bryan initially studied in Hawaii with David Williams, the first person to bring Ashtanga style of Yoga to America. He then studied in India with K. Pattabhi Jois, the main proponent of Ashtanga yoga.
Currently, Karen is undertaking another 1-year Diploma with Zen Ki Yoga. This training explores the 5-elelment theory, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Macrobiotics and Zen Shiatsu.
Karen has also enjoyed a 20-year career in the media industry, working across TV, film and theatre genres. During her career in media Karen worked as a Public Relations specialist with most of the major Australian TV Networks. She also acted as Publicity Manager of Sydney Theatre Company during Robyn Nevin’s tenure and worked with countless media identities, celebrities and ex-Australian Prime Ministers and anybody who wanted to be somebody. Karen intimately understands the corporate world and the pressures of working to daily deadlines.
As a yoga teacher, Karen draws on her corporate experience to show individuals, businesses and executive’s ways to incorporate a yoga practice to positively impact a sustainable work/life balance, to live less stressfully and to ultimately be more productive in the workplace and in their daily lives.
Karen visited India, the birthplace of yoga some years ago, spending three months there, and will return to engage in further studies and explore more about the thousands of years old tradition she has adopted as her pathway.
