I'm a dramatist and fiction writer who has written plays for the Traverse Theatre, Nutshell Theatre, Paines Plough, Quondam and BBC radio. My stage plays ALLOTMENT and THREAD have won Edinburgh Fringe Firsts, and radio work includes MACMILLAN’S MARVELOUS MOTION MACHINE (Radio 4) and SMALL BLUE THING (BBC Scotland). My short story collections WRAPPED TOWN and NANONOVELS appear under my own Texthouse imprint.
Residencies include the RL Stevenson Fellowship (National Library of Scotland) and an artists' residency at MoKS Centre for Art and Social Practice in Estonia, with support from EU LEADER and Creative Scotland. I've also written a play commission for the MA in Classical and Contemporary Text at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and am currently Associate Playwright with Playwrights' Studio Scotland. Non-theatre collaborations include Working the Tweed, a cross-artform project bringing together artists and scientists in the River Tweed catchment.
I’m an Open University tutor on A363 Advanced Creative Writing and the new OU MA in Creative Writing, for which I’ve helped write the materials. I’m originally from Hawick, studied German at Oxford, and returned to the Borders after a career in journalism and translation. My writing business, Texthouse, is based in a former textile mill in Selkirk.
