The Pattern Language of Taos Architecture

@ VOL 3 ON JUN 29, 2011

A city's architecture tends to tell you a lot about that city, and in this presentation, Rachel Preston Prinz highlights various architectural trends that you'll find in the city of Taos, New Mexico -- for example, the ornate bars that you'll see in one of the image are a reaction to the city's proximity to the "frontier." Instead of relying on an electric machine and a steel needle, Nunes makes his own tools and even his own ink when tattooing in this very rare ancient way.

Disabling Labelling

@ VOL 3 ON SEP 22, 2015

"By and large, most people thought it was time for change. And I was going to be part of that change."

In "Disabling Labelling" from PechaKucha Night St. Neots Vol. 3, writer, mentor, and idealist Ann Hawkins passionately talks about equal opportunity and the modern world lessons that she insists we must learn that race, gender, physical ability, sexual orientation, and all the various labels that we are so accustomed to assigning each other, have very little to do with the kind of people we actually are or how effective we can be in the world. "It's time to tidy up our language" she adds referring to limitations labels give us, concluding "we owe it to the next generation."

Presentations Today's two presentations come your way from Koszalin and Dayton. The one from Koszalin is by none other than PKN Koszalin organizer Gall Podlaszewski, and was done as part of our Global Cities Week. So follow Gall as she talks about her city (in Polish), PechaKucha-style. From Dayton, we get beer afficionado Max Spang who in "What the Hell Is Beer?" will go to great lengths to prove just how much he loves beer (and he's not alone). Posters On the poster front today, we've added three new ones, including posters for the upcoming collaboration between PKN Istanbul and PKN Yerevan (which this time, is an invitation-only event -- pictured above is the poster from the Yerevan side), and the poster for tonight's PKN Taos Vol. 6, celebrating "the remarkable women of Taos."  Photos We've started sharing more and more event galleries on our official PechaKucha Night Flickr account -- in the past it was only used for our Tokyo events -- and here are the latest photosets that have been added. PechaKucha Baltimore Speaker Guidelines

Greetings! We'll assume you're reading this post because you're either bored, or, interested in speaking or what we tell our speakers when helping them prepare to speak at our events. Well, they're pretty simple.  In fact, most of our speakers don't need these guidlines because we select speakers we or our friends, family and colleagues know, trust, and refer to us because they know and trust them. But, that's not a long-term, scalable approach so we came up with the following guidelines for speakers. You would be well-advised to watch as many presentations on the PechaKucha site to get an idea for how to deliver, what to put on your slides, etc. We would be happy to help you review your materials in advance. We do request that the final version of the material be in Powerpoint (preferred) or Keynote (acceptable), and sent to us by one week prior to the event. As a general rule, we aim to avoid creating any kind of explicit theme for the event. We're looking for uncurated ideas. Anything that is interesting and can promote broader thought and discussion. We have no agenda and prefer to keep the content of our gatherings intellectually, socially, politically and religiously accessible to all. We are looking for collaborators to join us in co-creating a space for possibility in which people can be free to express themselves and be open to thinking, learning and discussing. Presentations should have a point. If you have a story to tell, make sure there's a point to it. A take-away. Something for the audience to consider. You don't want to sit thru 20 "slides" of meaningless waffle, and neither does anyone else. We believe in free speech and that with free speech comes a personal responsibility to take community standards into account, i.e. it's in everyone's best interest to stay clear of any widely divisive agendas (political or other) as well as anything that a reasonable person would find blatantly offensive. Presenters should avoid promoting a "specific" thing, product or service. However, we are not opposed to the use of a thing, product, or service as an example of a "greater idea". In addition,we suggest the following content constraints:- No charity pleas.- No direct business promotion.- No deliberately inflammatory attacks.- Nothing that would land a presenter in trouble with Local, State, and/or Federal intelligence and law enforcement agencies if said out loud in a public space or in court (e.g., certain types of porn, certain types of threats, counterfeit money, etc.). Other than that...we are looking for a free exchange of ideas. We won't prejudge who has these ideas or where they will show up. People who have never presented before as well as anyone who has never presented in PK or Ignite formats are encouraged to attend a PK or watch some of the many PK presentations available at or on YouTube before speaking. We want to involve anyone who has passion for an idea and can express it in a way to open-up learning and possibilities for an audience ... Constrained to 20 x 20. ;-)   Hope to see you at one of our events! ^HG

5 reasons why Pecha Kucha is **THE** night out in Coventry this Friday...

Yes, it's Pecha Kucha night at the Tin Music & Arts centre from 7pm this Friday, here's 5 reasons why this night of merry amusement just might be for you... 1) If you like TED talks, stand up comedy or open mic nights - Pecha Kucha is sort of like all three rolled into one. At each night there's a massive mix of zany, opinionated, inspirational and downright oddball people talking (or perhaps shouting, dancing, miming or singing) through a series of 20 images. You don't have to worry about stifling any yawns, each person is only allowed 20 seconds per image... before you know it you've had six and a half minutes of eclectic entertainment... and after 3 or 4 you realise the £3 entry is definitely giving your two bob's worth. 2) TFI Friday and alcohol is served. The Tin offer loads of continental drinks and local brews including Coventry's very own Byatt's beer. 3) Fighting winter flu? You can watch Pecha Kucha from your sickbed - All the Pecha Kucha presentations are put online at Seriously laugh-out-loud recommendations from the Pecha Kucha Coventry 'Christmas' edition are: How to Annoy Your Friends on Facebook at Christmas by Simon Fairbanks and Placing Children on Your Lap: the Art of Ventriloquism by Michael Mayhew.  You can also follow antics via Twitter live on the night @PKN_coventry. 4) Try it and like it? You can go to a Pecha Kucha night ANYWHERE in the world. Originally starting in Tokyo (the tongue twisting "Pecha Kucha" title means "chit chat"), nights now take place in over 700 cities worldwide. So next time you're surfing the Air B&B waves to Dubai, Budapest, San Francisco or Paris you can also take in a Pecha Kucha night*. 5) If you get the itch after seeing (and possibly secretly mocking) others, you can have a go too. Anyone is welcome to sign up to 'do' a Pecha Kucha night on any subject, in any style, with any images and props you might care to use. Once you've completed this curious right-of-passage, you realise there's no return; it's addictive, it's fun and it's a serious preference to sitting in and worrying about your post-January diet. See you on Friday! *disclaimer - not all nights may be as good as Pecha Kucha Coventry. Please also note that you could be educated or inspired and that there's a serious risk of meeting people...
