Disabling Labelling

BY ANN HAWKINS
@ VOL 3 ON SEP 22, 2015

"By and large, most people thought it was time for change. And I was going to be part of that change."

In "Disabling Labelling" from PechaKucha Night St. Neots Vol. 3, writer, mentor, and idealist Ann Hawkins passionately talks about equal opportunity and the modern world lessons that she insists we must learn that race, gender, physical ability, sexual orientation, and all the various labels that we are so accustomed to assigning each other, have very little to do with the kind of people we actually are or how effective we can be in the world. "It's time to tidy up our language" she adds referring to limitations labels give us, concluding "we owe it to the next generation."

Exploring Palma's Creativity

BY CLEA ELFVIN
@ VOL 1 ON JUN 04, 2019

CLEA ELFVIN

Swedish Elf Living in Palma
My name is Clea and I am twelve years old. I was born in Stockholm, Sweden.

I lived in Sweden until I was seven and then I moved to Spain. I had already been to Spain a lot in the summer because my parents lived there before with my two brothers who are now sixteen and twenty-nine.

It was scary because I had no friends in Mallorca and I was also starting at a new school. It was a Swedish school but it was still a bit scary. We rented a house in Alaro and I have lived there ever since.

The first year we only had one pet, but over the years we have had chickens, birds, donkeys, sheep, and cats.
That’s why I love animals so much!

Some of the other things I love are singing, acting and reading. I started acting when I got a role as Rafiki in the school musical and since then I look forward to the musicals we do at school every year. From that, I got a role in Christmas Carol which I have acted in for two years at the auditorium on Paseo Marítimo. I read a lot and go to singing class so I get to do all of my favourite things.

I love Palma because of the people and how much they care. In Stockholm people don’t say “Hi” when you are on the train, they don’t say “thank you” when they leave the supermarket – but in Palma, that’s just everyday life!

Best of Sweden

This week goes out to the Swedes, with our City Focus shining the spotlight on Stockholm -- in part because of tomorrow's very special Vol. 38 -- and our "Presentations of the Day" for the week all coming from Swedish PKN cities. We kick things off with this classic presentation from the incredible PKN Vol. 20 celebrations that happened in Stockholm a few years ago, and it comes in the form of a Finish love for Sweden. Illka Suppanen on Backyard Babies, Swedish meatballs, and how IKEA helps you out of your crisis.

My Airfield, My Festival

How many people could you motivate to join you in building fragile works of art on a windy day in a Swedish airfield? For most, this task may seem impossible, but for someone as magnetic as Bella Rune, it wasn't such a big deal. In today's edition of Presentation of the Day (from PKN Tokyo Vol. 67) Bella shows us what happens when you're asked by a major network in your country (in this case, Sweden) to film a art-show/vignette for a cultural TV program. She tells us of the financial trials of running out of funding quickly, tribulations of calling on friends to put together massive works composed of bamboo and plastic, and the eventual triumph of carrying out the construction of a 17-meter-high cobra.

Handshake Agreement

When a new organizer is approved to start a PechaKucha Night series in city -- after they have contacted us -- we exchange our special "handshake agreement," and it is then renewed on an annual basis. Since we're based in Tokyo, all of these exchanges are done by email (after signing and scanning). We recently received the visit of PKN Sundsvall organizer Kristina Brink at the PechaKucha HQ, and since it was almost time to renew our agreement with her, we did it then and there. A PechaKucha first! Pictured from left, PK founders Mark Dytham and Astrid Klein, executive director Jean Snow, and Kristina.

A PKN to Remember in Stockholm

It was certainly a PKN to remember, with Stockholm's Vol. 38 attracting over 1000 (possibly close to 1200) for an event that included an international lineup of design, including Ross Lovegrove, David Wiberg, Mette Rode Sundström, and Anton Alvarez. We already have a few photos on the event page to share, and there will be more in the coming days, as well as the presentations themselves. Pictured left, Ross Lovegrove takes to the stage.
