The main activity of the organization is to support potential entrepreneurs towards the strategic challenging of their ideas, testing their analysis and introducing them to investors. Thanks to the contacts and the expertise of the association, a team of associates help the entrepeneur draft a strategic business plan to be presented in front of prospective investors.

Creativity Loves Constraints: Improvisation, Always our Very Best Alternative


In business as in life, we try to control the future by making (business) strategies and (marketing) plans. But most of the time, things turn our differently, don’t go as planned. And then we fall back on improvisation.

Improvisation always is our very best alternative. We improvise when something unexpected happens; we improvise because we have forgotten to take certain influences into account; we improvise when people behave differently than we expected.

The best leaders, the best managers, the best professionals are not those that excel in analysis and making plans and strategies, but the ones that fully master and exploit their improvisation skills.

And, by the way, improvisation is also a very useful approach to living one’s life.

Una de las componentes, Marta Castellano, nos explicaba como surgió el proyecto: "Un día estábamos en una reunión de amigas, una comentó que al otro día iba a donar sangre y surgieron muchas preguntas y dudas alrededor del tema así que nos pusimos a investigar de qué se trataba y qué podíamos hacer al respecto. De ese trabajo de investigación que llevó más de un año y medio, surge la idea de FACTOR MITO, una campaña realizada pensando en el potencial donante, en sus miedos, en la desinformación que hay que no le permite acercarse al banco de sangre a realizar una donación. Decidimos hacer un mito por mes, a través de un audiovisual de aprox. un minuto, con un lenguaje claro y cotidiano, donde tratáramos un mito en particular pero además agregaríamos un plus de información, haciendo hincapié en que siendo donante voluntario y habitual sabés qué cuidados tenés que tener y así tu sangre es más segura."

En Dpto. 8 Comunicación Estratégica son: Alejandra Segovia y Berenise Ortiz (fotógrafas y diseñadoras) y Marta Castellano (redacción, comunicación y redes). Para llevar a cabo Factor Mito trabajan con ellas la comunicadora Maricel Della Vitta que graba los vídeos y realiza la animación, la actriz Gabriela Feroglio (la  cara visible en los vídeos), la Dra. Constanza Castellano (asesora médica de contenidos) y un invitado amigo que cambia con cada mito.
La idea es completar 12 capítulos con los audiovisuales, y a partir de ahí mantener la página de facebook  que es un gran canal de comunicación con la gente, y empezar a trabajar con las escuelas, con material didáctico para poder instalar el tema en todas las casas.

PKN Minneapolis in the News

The Minneapolis' Star Tribune gives coverage to that city's upcoming PechaKucha Night Vol. 2 (tomorrow night, August 12) with a nicely titled piece ("PowerPoint on speed? You pecha") that looks at the successful first event, and what people can expect from Vol. 2. PKN Minneapolis has so far had a strong design spin to it in terms of presentations, but it sounds like organizer Jonas Schaefer is really hoping to move beyond that. We want to expand it to innovative ideas in any industry. We want to see what happens when fresh thinkers from all different communities get together and share their fascinations over a beer. The piece's writer has a great follow-up line: Now if you could just persuade your bosses to adopt this strategy for the next quarterly sales meeting. Amen to that.

Ideas for Christchurch

Also coming to us from Christchurch today (see our previous post about the event postponement), organizer Vanessa Coxhead fills us in on an intriguing new project called "Ideas for Christchurch," that looks to get young architecture students working together on ideas for rebuilding Christchurch. Below, the details of the project. This is a call for ideas. Christchurch's recent 7.1 magnitude earthquake has severely damaged much of the built fabric of the city, in particular historic buildings in the centre. Outlying suburbs have been hard hit and vast numbers of homes will need to be reconsidered. Currently teams are working to assess, and to salvage what is possible of the city's buildings. Within a few weeks large-scale rebuilding will begin. This call for ideas comes from a group of young architectural graduates with an interest in engaging members of the public in dialogue around building decisions that affect them. The events in Christchurch have given their concerns a direct and immediate weight: over the coming months, hugely significant, city-defining architectural and planning decisions are going to have to be made. We implore the public at large, as well as architecture students and practicing architects, to become involved in a positive and productive discussion over the nature of these decisions and the kinds of rebuilding they would like to see take place. We want to see your ideas providing a framework to give shape to what could, should, or might be. Choose your strategy, construct an argument, share a notion, indulge in joyful play, fight against or reach towards. Scale is open: form a strategic vision for the entire city; reconsider a hard hit suburb; preserve a local dairy. Salvage heritage and character, design temporary infills, sustainable developments, urban parks/reserves, inner-city living, a new typology of housing, a city of skyscrapers, a city of pickles… whatever you find interesting. We want ideas, ideas to stimulate interest and establish discussion to achieve the best for Christchurch. Design, plan, write, draw, paint, model, dream... just share what you value and deliver it in an A3 digital format to Submit as often as you want, as a group or as an individual; identify yourself or remain anonymous. Ippo x 365 - Reflections on the Japanese Front

For last year's Inspire Japan event, Motoko Shoboji stepped up and put together a special PechaKucha event in New York to help raise awareness and to contribute to the global fundraiser. Greg Baugues is the Director of Client Service at Table XI, but his training started over a decade ago at Walt Disney World, where he served as a janitor and got an unexpected education in customer service. In this edition of Presentation of the Day (from Table XI's April Table Talks) Greg describes Disney's strategy of empowering its employees (er, Cast Members) to make a positive impact on the park's guests. For zero-gravity ping-pong-ball parties.  Maryam Nabavi, an Innovation Strategist at Idea Couture, talks about her strategy for the future of commerical space (i.e. Virgin Galactic) as a service industry. If you ever thought about living in space, then small bathrooms, carbon-dehydrated food, and uncomfortable sleeping arrangements are probably not what you had in mind. However, in "Space Tourism: Hospitality or Adventure Industry?" from PKN Toronto Vol. 27, we learn that Nabavi redesigned the experience to have humans at the center of the problem so that it can be an enjoyable and memorable experience for anyone no matter their financial or physical situation.

What do satire, pigs, government, crocodiles, strategy, and mice all have in common? Ryan Sumo is an indie game developer and artist who is currently working on a game called Party Animals, that takes a fascinating look at Filipino politics, by presenting it in a way that makes it surprisingly fun.  "Party Animals" was recorded live at BitSummit MMXIV, the 2nd edition of the Kyoto-based indie game festival.

The Odyssey Project

"It seeks to demonstrate how artistic cooperation transcends class, racial and social barriers ... and serves as an alternative to incarceration and penalty."In "The Odyssey Project" from PechaKucha Santa Barbara Vol. 14, Ahmed Asi describes the collaborative theater process between youth from a juvenile detention facility in Santa Barbara county and undergraduate students from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Using the template of Homer's Odyssey, the participants gather on the university campus to explore the mythic elements in their lives in order to reconstruct the epic poem in their own voices. The project leads to a public performance at a local theater. Everyone on this creative journey is a hero or heroine. The project is designed to honor youth in identifying their heroic life mission and map a course of action. It employs theater arts as a strategy for inspiring life affirming choices.

Dumb, Lazy, and Unruly Perfectionist

“If you told me six years ago that I could do this I would never believe you… Because really, I’m lazy as a panda, I'm not very smart, and I have difficulty focusing on one thing at one time. So i had to create a system, a strategy to sit and draw, because I really love to draw. ” In Dumb, Lazy, and Unruly Perfectionist from PechaKucha Night Tokyo’s 132nd Volume, Speaker Vasco Mourão, an Architect turned illustrator with a tendency for obsessive drawing and detail, explains his creative process. The Barcelona-native explains that by keeping a simple, manageable, distraction free routine, he argues that one does not have to be very smart or productive to produce great works.

A Researcher Gone Practical

"I started teaching, because I try to make students be able to apply their research, understand what it can mean for business." In "A Researcher Gone Practical" from PechaKucha Night Maastricht Vol. 31, Tessa van Asselt explains why academic insights should be used for business, and how research can be practically applied to business strategy. Tessa recalls the challenges she faced while trying to apply her research knowledge and methonds to a real-world project, and shares her passion about teaching and helping students to make links between research and business.
