Meier is a Brooklyn-based writer focusing on the arts and overlooked history. Currently, she is staff writer atHyperallergic, and moonlights as a cemetery tour guide at New York burial grounds. These tours are focused on cemeteries as places of history, art, and architecture, as well as concerned in keeping our memorial sites visible for preservation and remembrance. At PechaKucha Night NYC Vol 16, Allison discusses these often abandoned and forgotten spaces right in the middle of our bustling city - reminding us the importance of slowing down.

The Power of Radio

Originally from Caracas, Venezuela, Carlos Chirinos’ work explores innovation and creativity in emerging global music industries, looking at the role of music in public health, international development and social change. He has been a key consultant for radio and music projects in Europe, Africa and Japan - and most recently worked to develop Africa Stop Ebola, a global music campaign to raise awareness about Ebola in West Africa that was featured in the New York Times, The Guardian, BBC and CNN, for which he received an award from the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the U.S. Department of Defense, and USAID.

Currently, Professor Chirinos collaborates with the David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center, curating music performances to engage the Latin community living in New York City. He is also involved in projects in the UK, Tanzania, Cuba and other countries, looking at the role of music industries in economic development, tourism and social entrepreneurship. He also runs New York University's Music and Social Change Lab

Erik is a performer from Snellville, Georgia. He has danced all over the world and shown his work in Atlanta, New Orleans, Birmingham, Houston, Detroit and New York City. His work centers around ideas of obsession, control and desire.

The Story of PechaKucha

Last week's PechaKucha Night in Tokyo Vol. 68 kicked off with PK founders Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham, along with Architecture for Humanity's Cameron Sinclair (through a Skype call), introducing the upcoming PechaKucha Global Night for Haiti -- make sure to watch the presentation to find out what this is all about. After that, we were all treated to a second presentation by Astrid and Mark, this time taking us on a 20-image tour of the history of PechaKucha, talking about how it started and how it got to become the worldwide phenomenon we know today.

2000 Stories

This is not the 2000th post on the blog, but the post that has that honnor did get posted earlier today, and it's another milestone we can add to the list of big numbers we've been hitting lately (PechaKucha's 9th anniversary, 500 cities, 90 PechaKucha Nights in Tokyo). That means that we've had the pleasure of sharing a great deal of PechaKucha-related stories here, and we have no intention of stopping anytime soon.

A Concept Store in Dubai and What's Going on at SuperDeluxe

Tima Ouzeden is a fashion designer and cultural producer based in Dubai. In her presentation (from PKN Dubai Vol. 11), Tima shares 20 facts about the hugely successful concept DXB Store, a not-for-profit space that Tima has been involved in since its inception. It's a concept that is very close to her heart. At each PKN in Tokyo, Kono-san goes over some of the recent events that were held at the SuperDeluxe event space -- where PKN was born -- and announces upcoming events. He also likes to start off with a few personal experiences he's had. This presentation, in Japanese, is from PKN Tokyo Vol. 94.

China’s largest real estate developer Vanke hosted Shenzhen’s ninth PechaKucha creative networking night. Held in December 2011 in Vanke’s prestigious headquarters located near the popular tourist beach of Dameisha, the event was the first to exclusively showcase Chinese artists,designers and architects. Vanke developed a very progressive concrete design workshop. The Story of Sheep

“‘Just imagine,’ ‘I wonder,’ and ‘What if’ are some of my favorite words in the English language. They conjure up the possible, the impossible, and the just plain crazy.” Abigail Walsh tells us a story of sheep, and his best friend bird. In “The Story of Sheep” from PKN Christchurch Vol. 21 we also hear about elephant, a retired mountain guide who sheep desires to meet. Abigail tells us how her story came to life, and how it was interwoven with her own.

Despite the stormy weather yesterday, we had a great event for our 4th Pecha Kucha Night at the Museum of Northwest Art.
