Fashion & identity

@ VOL 5 ON FEB 28, 2013

Want wie was zij nou eigenlijk?

New Born Fame

Should newborns be given a choice as to whether they want to be on social media? One woman designed a toy that gives them that “choice.” Technologist and developer Laura Cornet found that 46% of parents (based on a UK poll) post photos of their children to Facebook on the the day they are born. In “New Born Fame” from PKN Breda Vol. 12 we see that she developed a product that allows babies to post selfies from the crib as a technological and ethical experiment. The results were greater that she could have expected.

The Problem with Selfies

"Next time you go to take a photo of yoursef, ask a friend to take it instead. Transform yourself into an image that tells a story." In The Problem with Selfies, from Christchurch Vol. 23, oral historian Rosemary Baird explains how selfies are useless to historians, depriving images of context or including the everyday, transient, impermanent aspects of history. She admits that in the world of social media, we're over focussed on presenting on an image of ourselves that is leisured, polished, enviable, ignoring what might seem mundane, yet the very things that offer the context that can transport us to other worlds. Hand your camera over and pose for this fascinating presentation!
