Her firm, Terreform ONE, built a sustainable insect shelter on site to conduct extensive research on crickets - studying their growth, social development, and reproductive habits...before harvesting the adults and turning them into tasty treats!

Maria is an architect, educator, designer, and community builder in New York City. She is an innovator in ecological design, smart cities, sustainable urban infrastructure, water, transportation, and waste. Maria is a leader in interdisciplinary education focused on future cities.

The Noodle Igloo

With a backdrop like this, who wouldn't want to grab a bowl of soba here? In today's Presentation of the Day, "The Noodle Igloo" from PKN Tokyo Vol. 68, architect Takeshi Hosaka (of Takeshi Hosaka architects) shows off his work on the roadside soba-noodle restaurant Hoto Fudo. Takeshi details the efforts made to make the structure as eco-friendly as possible -- even to a point where he negated the need for any air-conditioning units!

Ibrahim Parlak's Story with a Twist

  “He called the restaurant Gulistan which means ‘the land of roses’. To the restaurant came the people. First one, then two, then a bunch.” In Ibrahim Parlak's Story with a Twist from PechaKucha Night Saint Joseph’s 4th volume, Presenter Ashley Reichert tells the story of a man from Kurdistan, Ibrahim Paralak, and his journey to a small town in Michigan. He is in search of freedom - a place where people are free to speak their minds, free from oppression, and free persecution. All he wants is to make a peaceful place for his family, his restaurant, and a place to grow his roses. All is going well, until one day he is just gone. Soon, many people ask where he has gone, and learn he has been jailed with the fear of being deported. Ashley goes on to tell us how he is released from jail and goes back to family, his restaurant, and his roses. All seems well again, but there's a twist.

PK People: Kamu Kakizaki and Kir Moore

This Week's PechaKucha People spotlight lands on PKN Anchorage’s organizers Kamu Kakizaki and Kir Moore. As one of the newest cities to join the PechaKucha Family, Anchorage has already WOWed us with hosting a very successful First Volume on January 5th at the Anchorage Museum. Kir moved to Alaska from LA, and runs a small design studio working with restaurant and retail start-ups while Kamu is the senior designer for the Anchorage Museum. Kir and Kamu are bringing PechaKucha Night to the Anchorage community in conjunction with the Alaska Design Forum, where they are both board members, committed to the mission of broadening the discussion of design and the built environment in Alaska. We are looking forward to the duo making Vol. 2 a success, and once again, Welcome to the PechaKucha Family, Kamu and Kir!
