Disabling Labelling

@ VOL 3 ON SEP 22, 2015

"By and large, most people thought it was time for change. And I was going to be part of that change."

In "Disabling Labelling" from PechaKucha Night St. Neots Vol. 3, writer, mentor, and idealist Ann Hawkins passionately talks about equal opportunity and the modern world lessons that she insists we must learn that race, gender, physical ability, sexual orientation, and all the various labels that we are so accustomed to assigning each other, have very little to do with the kind of people we actually are or how effective we can be in the world. "It's time to tidy up our language" she adds referring to limitations labels give us, concluding "we owe it to the next generation."

This was "PechaKucha of the Day" on Thursday, October 15th, 2015.

Miami Loves Loving Day

The Loving Day name comes from Loving v. Virginia (1967), the landmark Supreme Court decision that declared all laws against interracial marriage unconstitutional in the United States. A couple named Richard and Mildred Loving won their right to marry.  Now Loving Day is embraced globally by a diverse range of individuals and organizations, especially popular among interracial, multicultural, international, and interfaith couples - as well as multiracial and multicultural people.

@ VOL 27 ON MAY 10, 2018

The Mongol Derby is widely regarded as the toughest horse race in the world: a grueling 1,000 kilometers across the Mongolian steppe, riding semi-feral horses, carrying only 11 pounds of gear and relying on nomads for food, water and shelter. Equestrian sports journalist Leslie Wylie Bateman thought it'd make for a great story ... IF she could survive the race to tell it.

Let's Talk: Getting Real About The 'Isms'

We believe that in order to build the bridges and break down walls, we must be willing to tackle all the "isms".  We must be willing to not just acknowledge them, but actively seek to oppose them.  Our approach to conversations about race, class, and gender forcuses on discussion about undoing systems of privilege and oppression.  My presentation would discuss how we help people make real chang and have honest convesation during our workshops!

Ravi Jetshan

Ravi Jetshan (Ravior) has been a jewelry maker since 1982, and he presented some of his work at the recent PechaKucha Night in Mauritius Vol. 2. That city's organizer, Stephen Ng, writes this about Ravi: Volume 2 was certainly highlighted by Ravior, a jewelry making company led by Ravi Jetshan since 1982 -- "or" means gold in French and in Creole, Mauritius' very own dialect that Ravi uses when naming some of his collections. One thing you'll soon realize with Ravi is that he really holds a lot of affection towards his culture, his tradition, his country, and he perfectly translates all of that through his designs. Add to this the fact that he has traveled the world and speaks six languages -- the audience at Vol. 2 could well understand how the man delivers such great creativity, innovation, and attention to detail. "The success of Ravior is essentially the product of fine-tuned teamwork by groomed professionals equipped with multiple skills reinforced by continuous advanced training. Rigour in craft and skill is the key to quality production for each and every jewellery piece, all this driven by professional and civic ethics." This was taken from, where more of his collections can be viewed. At the start of his presentation this is what Ravi had to say in Creole: "Ene le monde sans bijou, c'est ene ene le monde sans lamour." Literally, a world without jewelry is a world without love...

Unsanctioned Racing, Chance Meetings at Guido's (With Photos), and More Photos from Hong Kong

Presentations In his presentation (from PKN Chattanooga Vol. 11), Jim Farmer takes a look at all manner of unsanctioned racing, from the nostalgic to the crazy, to the plain old fun. As we discover in her presentation (from PKN Pittsfield Vol. 3), Diane Firtell goes out and takes photos of people she meets at the Guido's grocery store (and sometimes other places), a project that then saw her add computer "painting" to eliminate the visual noise in the background of the photos. Posters For today's additions to the Tumblr blog, we start with a look at the flyer and poster for the upcoming PKN Guimaraes Vol. 4. We've also added the poster for PKN Castellon de la Plana Vol. 2  Photos Adding to the photo gallery for last week's PKN Hong Kong Vol. 12 we've already shared, here are two more Facebook galleries to share, with photos by Cheehaur Tan and Vic Shing (Art Surveillance).  Calendar There are no events this evening, but tomorrow night sees PKN Providence Vol. 42. Thursday will bring the following five events: PKN Guatelmala City Vol. 2, PKN Lille Vol. 2, PKN Knoxville Vol. 5, PKN Chillicothe Vol. 1, and PKN Vladimir Vol. 9.

Adopting a Racing Dog, Moving to the Shakespeare Beat, and Pinteresting Finds

Presentations Another fantastic kids presentation from Derby (Vol. 5), this time with Freya talking about her dog Alfie, a retired racing greyhound. If this doesn't convince you that adopting a retired racing dog is a good idea, we don't know what will. Can you move to the Shakespeare beat? Ben Spiller will make sure that you do in his presentation (from PKN Derby Vol. 6), before introducing you to the Shakespeare workout. Some presentations see a person sharing their work, and some see the presenter sharing what inspires him or her. Here (from PKN Pittsfield Vol. 3), Richard Britell does the latter, sharing finds from Pinterest. This presentation (in French, from PKN Lyon Vol. 4) is about Alles Gut, a graphic design studio founded by Antoine Eckart and Francis Josserand. The idea was born from the desire of putting together their skills and their vision of design combining esthetic and function. They act in the field of print (ID, posters, editing), web design, and illustration. And with these four presentations we hit a new milestone today, reaching 600 online presentations -- or make that two, since our city count has just hit 580. Events We announced it a couple of weeks ago, but here's a reminder that here in Tokyo, PechaKucha is teaming up with ArchiAid for a very special event next week (Thursday, November 22) at SuperDeluxe in Roppongi. This PechaKucha event will be jam-packed with an inspirational lineup of architects -- including SANAA and Atelier Bow-Wow -- who will present their ArchiAid-supported projects in Tohoku (northern Japan, the area most affected by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami), using the 20x20 format you know and love. You'll find more event details and the full lineup of presenters on our Facebook event page and Inspire Japan site. Participants will also contribute books to be auctioned during the break, to raise funds. You can also support ArchiAid initiatives through the PechaKucha website -- click on the big blue "A+" logo. Photos Tallinn had its Vol. 6 earlier this week, but here's a photo gallery [Flickr] from the city's Vol. 5, held back in September. You'll find the list of presenters on the official event page.  Calendar After a busy week, it's a relatively quiet weekend, with two events scheduled for tonight (Friday, November 16) -- PKN Aalen Vol. 12 and PKN Hamptons Vol. 2 -- and then PKN Johannesburg Vol. 8 happening on Saturday.

A message from PechaKucha co-founder, Mark Dytham: Thank you very much for your generous support! I have hit my Indiegogo Campaign target raising ¥1,000,000 for 'Home For All' by running the Tokyo Marathon. There are still a lot of projects to be funded so if you haven't donated yet there are 48 hours left on my Indiegogo campaign -- and now you can also donate through PayPal. Raise the Roof

Architecture and design forms an integral part of our lives. Our physical space influences us in numerous ways and quiet often dictates our moods and behaviour. It has the power to define a city, a society, a country, a culture. It can motivate us, and even subjugate us. In this volume of PechaKucha Nights we will be talking about how architecture helps us express and define ourselves. If you are interested in presenting, send in your ideas and a few sample images on latest by 27th February 2018. For details click :
