Urban Folding Bench - Concept to Prototype

It is during a master project semester about design that Lola Mahieu, an architecture student, is working about the concept of unfolding the ground. After making a scenography that is coming out the ground, she participates to the call of projects « Lyon City Design 2015 » and she comes up with a folding urban bench. It was conceptualized to replace the retractable bollards and allow the modularity of urban spaces. She is one of the winners and she received a three thousand euro prize to build a prototype that would be exhibited in Lyon city less than a year later. In her speech she evokes the difficulty she finds partnering with manufacturer and urban developers ready to innovate. She also explains what she gained in this experience as an architect beginner. {In French}

Wearable Technology for All

Jensin Wallace relates her trip to Slovenia to collaborate with a man suffering from tetraplegia to create custom smart clothing to assist him on a day to day basis - all controlled by his cell phone! Wow!

Jensin was trained as textile textile designer at the Rhode Island School of Design and experimented with how to make sound and emotions tangible. After getting some experience in the luxury fashion industry, she went back to school and received a Masters of Design focusing in fashion and technology. Currently she works as a sweater technical designer for a high end women's label in NYC.

This was "PechaKucha of the Day" on Monday, November 9th, 2015.

有川愛彩さんは、 早稲田大学大学院で建築を学ぶ大学院生。 所属する渡辺仁史研究室は「未来の暮しをデザインする」ことをテーマに、 建築という1つの分野にとらわれず幅広い視点から研究を行い、問題解決・問題提起を行ってきました。昨年は、日本人の暮しに欠かせないながら現代の住宅から姿を消しつつある「畳」を題材に、未来のくらしに繋がる新たな畳のプロトタイプを製作・発表しました。TOKYO DESIGN WEEK 2015で高評価を得た本プロジェクトの、真髄に迫ります。

At Wednesday's PechaKucha Night Vol. 105, Lasse Farnung Laursen returns to the PK stage, this time with a talk about how VJs and DJs should talk! Lasse explains: Based on research conducted at the University of Tokyo, I present my ideas and perspectives on how to improve the communication between DJs and VJs during a live performance. This is the second presentation in a series involving a new touch-based audio mixing interface that I am designing, with the goal of allowing for more creativity in a live setting. The talk concludes with a brief sneak peek of the second prototype of the touch-based interface. Clean water may not be a luxury for us, but it is for many. Bradley Pierik (of Twothirds Water) has been studying the systems by which third-world countries purify their water to make it safe for human consumption. When waterborne diseases account for the majority of hospitalizations, a filtration system can literally be a lifesaver. In "Clean Water for Life" from PKN Vancouver Vol. 28, Bradley goes into depth on his research and a prototype filter he's made while performing outreach in countries all over.

Hyperloop - Your Everyday Roller Coaster

In Hyperloop - Your Everyday Roller Coaster from PechaKucha Night Special x MINI @ BMW Group Tokyo Bay, David Chew Vee Kuan shares how he and a team of students is trying to build the prototype of a futuristic transportation system called the Hyperloop. They are bringing their micro version of Hyperloop to compete with other teams from the US and Europe in Space X HQ, LA this October.
