Chance Meetings at Guido's (And Other Places)
BY DIANE FIRTELL
@ VOL 3
ON AUG 14, 2012
Diane Firtell goes out and takes photos of people she meets at the Guido's grocery store (and sometimes other places), a project that then saw her add computer "painting" to eliminate the visual noise in the background of the photos. (In English)

PKN Pittsfield Vol. 1
Pittsfield held its very first PechaKucha Night last week at the Berkshire Museum, and here are a few photos from the event, with more in this Flickr photoset. As you'll notice in the photos, one of the presenters had a very canine appeal... We're quite certain this is the first non-human presenter we've seen at a PKN -- please correct us if we're wrong. And please note that PKN Pittsfield Vol. 2 is already set for June 14.
Celebrating Melville and a Creative Jobs Platform in Brazil
Presentations Megan Whilden is a government worker in the city of Pittsfield, and in this presentation (from PKN Pittsfield Vol. 1) she talks about the "Call Me Melville" summer cultural program. In this presentation (in Portuguese, from PKN Sao Paulo Vol. 7), Tiago Yonamine talks about how he created Trampos, Brazil's biggest and most famous creative jobs platform. From its Twitter account to the new powerful website, Tiago explains how young talent needs a place to find work and how brands can take notice of their potential. Posters Today's new posters on the Tumblr blog come from Durban -- for the city's Vol. 7, which is happening on August 22 -- and Springfield, MO, for tonight's Vol. 7. Notice Although the worldwide PechaKucha network never rests, the HQ does in order to replenish its energy, and hopefully catch a few rays. We will therefore be on "sleep" mode for the next two weeks, and won't be doing our regular daily posts during this time. We will still have two new presentations going up on the site each and every day, which we'll share on the blog as well, but for details on the PKNs happening during this 2-week period, please have a look at our calendar page. Calendar Tonight, Friday (August 3), you can catch the following three events: PKN Panjim Vol. 3, PKN Springfield, MO Vol. 7, and PKN Hakata Vol. 7. Then on Sunday, we have PKN Dunsborough Vol. 5 and PKN Beijing Vol. 21, and Monday has PKN Pittsboro Vol. 11.
Comparing the US to the UK and Projects for Alternative Living
For this presentation (from PKN Pittsfield Vol. 1), let David Hyde take you on a tongue-in-cheek comparative tour of the US and the UK -- expect stereotypes galore, and a good laugh. Redesigna is a collaboration of different projects in Augsburg -- each of these projects focuses on alternative living. This presentation (in German, from PKN Augsburg Vol. 1) shows a variety of recycled and upcycled projects created by Doris Leitner.
Unsanctioned Racing, Chance Meetings at Guido's (With Photos), and More Photos from Hong Kong
Presentations In his presentation (from PKN Chattanooga Vol. 11), Jim Farmer takes a look at all manner of unsanctioned racing, from the nostalgic to the crazy, to the plain old fun. As we discover in her presentation (from PKN Pittsfield Vol. 3), Diane Firtell goes out and takes photos of people she meets at the Guido's grocery store (and sometimes other places), a project that then saw her add computer "painting" to eliminate the visual noise in the background of the photos. Posters For today's additions to the Tumblr blog, we start with a look at the flyer and poster for the upcoming PKN Guimaraes Vol. 4. We've also added the poster for PKN Castellon de la Plana Vol. 2 Photos Adding to the photo gallery for last week's PKN Hong Kong Vol. 12 we've already shared, here are two more Facebook galleries to share, with photos by Cheehaur Tan and Vic Shing (Art Surveillance). Calendar There are no events this evening, but tomorrow night sees PKN Providence Vol. 42. Thursday will bring the following five events: PKN Guatelmala City Vol. 2, PKN Lille Vol. 2, PKN Knoxville Vol. 5, PKN Chillicothe Vol. 1, and PKN Vladimir Vol. 9.
A Traveling Lawn Ornament, Pissing Off People, and PKN Tokyo Celebrates TDW
What a NIGHT! Yesterday's Tokyo Designers Week edition (PKN Tokyo Vol. 96) was a huge success, with a crowd that filled up the TDW Dome (close to 1000), and a lineup of presenters that inspired the crowd from start to finish. Over the coming days we'll be sharing more photos from the event, as well as most of the presentations online. Presentations In his presentation (from PKN Pittsfield Vol. 3), Geeg Wiles tell the story of Ahab, a short sailor-wannabe-pirate who goes from lawn ornament to motivational traveler. Do people piss you off? Do you piss off people? Here's a presentation (from PKN Grand Rapids Vol. 4) by Charlie Wolborg that tackles this odd -- and yet fun -- topic. Posters We have two new additions to the Tumblr blog today, starting with the poster for the upcoming PKN Vancouver Vol. 24, pictured above. Also new on the blog is the poster for PKN Perth Vol. 11. Calendar We kick off November with tonight's PKN Bucharest Vol. 10, and then tomorrow it's on to these four events: PKN New Plymouth Vol. 6, PKN Plzen Vol. 3, PKN Loviisa Vol. 6, and PKN Sarajevo Vol. 3.
Adopting a Racing Dog, Moving to the Shakespeare Beat, and Pinteresting Finds
Presentations Another fantastic kids presentation from Derby (Vol. 5), this time with Freya talking about her dog Alfie, a retired racing greyhound. If this doesn't convince you that adopting a retired racing dog is a good idea, we don't know what will. Can you move to the Shakespeare beat? Ben Spiller will make sure that you do in his presentation (from PKN Derby Vol. 6), before introducing you to the Shakespeare workout. Some presentations see a person sharing their work, and some see the presenter sharing what inspires him or her. Here (from PKN Pittsfield Vol. 3), Richard Britell does the latter, sharing finds from Pinterest. This presentation (in French, from PKN Lyon Vol. 4) is about Alles Gut, a graphic design studio founded by Antoine Eckart and Francis Josserand. The idea was born from the desire of putting together their skills and their vision of design combining esthetic and function. They act in the field of print (ID, posters, editing), web design, and illustration. And with these four presentations we hit a new milestone today, reaching 600 online presentations -- or make that two, since our city count has just hit 580. Events We announced it a couple of weeks ago, but here's a reminder that here in Tokyo, PechaKucha is teaming up with ArchiAid for a very special event next week (Thursday, November 22) at SuperDeluxe in Roppongi. This PechaKucha event will be jam-packed with an inspirational lineup of architects -- including SANAA and Atelier Bow-Wow -- who will present their ArchiAid-supported projects in Tohoku (northern Japan, the area most affected by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami), using the 20x20 format you know and love. You'll find more event details and the full lineup of presenters on our Facebook event page and Inspire Japan site. Participants will also contribute books to be auctioned during the break, to raise funds. You can also support ArchiAid initiatives through the PechaKucha website -- click on the big blue "A+" logo. Photos Tallinn had its Vol. 6 earlier this week, but here's a photo gallery [Flickr] from the city's Vol. 5, held back in September. You'll find the list of presenters on the official event page. Calendar After a busy week, it's a relatively quiet weekend, with two events scheduled for tonight (Friday, November 16) -- PKN Aalen Vol. 12 and PKN Hamptons Vol. 2 -- and then PKN Johannesburg Vol. 8 happening on Saturday.
Ever heard of an inspirational lawn ornament? Well you're about to. Geeg Wiles tells the story of his travelling companion Captain Ahab: a 3-foot-tall bright-yellow lawn ornament. In today's Presentation of the Day "Ahab's Adventures" from PKN Pittsfield Vol. 3, Geeg discusses what started as harmless college recreational photo project, and became an international phenomenon that inspired people around the globe to go out and have new and exciting experiences. Ahab has been skydiving, river-rafting, he's been to Yellowstone and Rushmore; as Geeg says, "if Ahab can do it ... so can you!"
