Cutting Pages

@ VOL 19 ON DEC 13, 2013

Charlene Asato joins us from the Big Island and has enjoyed creating with paper for many years. She finds it very exciting that a simple fold changes a two-dimensional plane into a three-dimensional form and artist’s books provide a wonderful avenue to convey this energy.

Poster for PKN Zagreb Vol. 3

PechaKucha Night returns to Zagreb tonight (June 11) for Vol. 3, as part of the Hartera music festival being held inside the old Rijeka paper factory. The poster for the event, pictured above, was created by Croatian graphic designer Dejan Dragosavac Ruta, who will also be one of the presenters.

Keiko Tsuji

Today Keiko Tsuji shows us what she's able to achieve with just her pair of Muji scissors and paper that already has something printed on it. Armed with only a pair of Muji scissors and some paper, Keiko explains the Japanese art of "kirie" or paper cutting. The presentation slowly unfolds showing how incredibly creative this art can be. The presentation is in Japanese with some English, but the pictures say it all!

Understanding Dubai, Twelvetone's Paper Toys, and PechaKuching in Koszalin

Presentations Although they joke that it's a city made up of "buildings and fountains," there is in fact a lot more to Dubai than just those two things, and in this presentation (from PKN Tokyo Vol. 92) by Ahmed and Rashid Bin Shabib, you'll see an amazing city in rapid development. Ahmed and Rashid are also behind Brownbook magazine. We're big fans of Takashi Tsunoda (aka Twelvetone) and his wonderful paper toys, and "PLAY-DECO" (in Japanese, and also from PKN Tokyo Vol. 92) will go a long way in showing you why they are so great. Posters We have no new additions to our Tumblr blog today, so instead we share (above) a poster that we uploaded a few days ago, for the upcoming PKN Vancouver Vol. 22 -- tickets just went on sale, and apparently are already sold-out.  Photos and Report Today we have one photo gallery [Picassa] to share, from the recent PKN Koszalin Vol. 9, which as you'll see -- and like we mentioned a week or two ago -- was held in the city's largest venue. Here's a report from PKN Koszalin organizer Gall Podlaszewski on the challenges that using a venue of that size meant for him and his team. Our weirdest PechaKucha Night is over. Long before it happened, we sensed it wouldn't be easy to attack the biggest venue in town (and in this part of Poland) with our really simple means. During the event, for some security reasons, it turned out to be impossible to turn off the lights. This made it pretty hard for the scattered audience in the enormous open-air theatre to focus on the slides. We were, of course, not thinking that we would touch the record audiences that go to the Tel Aviv events. PKN Koszalin's family accounts for a good 150 people. As always, several presentations were really great, we got good media coverage, and the experience of conquering the amphitheatre was super positive. The next day, unlocking my bike left under the amphitheatre, I was relieved to think: how wonderful it is, this feeling of pechakuching the city...Calendar First, a reminder of the events happening tonight, this first day of June: PKN Bucharest Vol. 9, PKN Tallinn Vol. 4, PKN Sioux Falls Vol. 3, PKN Kumamoto Vol. 3, and PKN Bangor Vol. 5. It's a quiet weekend, with only one event on tap, but a first, since it's for PKN Kilkenny Vol. 1. And if you want to plan your Monday in advance, take note that Stockholm will be hosting its Vol. 34.

PKN Posters: Quito Vol. 6

The town of Quito, Ecuador has a whimsical poster and collaborative idea for their upcoming Vol. 6 evening. They've designed a poster that's meant to be folded into a paper-airplane. PKN Quito organizer Francisco Mejia has this to say about this fun, global project: We would like to ask people around the world to download the poster, make the paper plane and take photos of the plane wherever they are. The idea is to show all the photos we receive the night of the event, this way we can show a little more of our PKN community around the world. You can join in on the fun by downloading the poster here and sending your paper-plane photos to -- we'll link to them later on!

Systemic Painting

If you've ever wanted to see the inside of an artist's mind, this is a great way to do it. Bob Richardson shares his unique mode of painting using a grid-system, and in "Systemic Painting" from PKN Midcoast, Maine Vol. 19 explains how his art style has changed over the years. He uses a variety of mediums, including canvas, silk screen, and watercolor paper. After retirement, Bob revisited his systemic painting method and experimented with new compositions and brush widths to create effective pieces of art.

A Paper Tale

"When the eyes temporarily refuse to collaborate with the brain, it usually causes a beautiful paradox."In "A Paper Tale" from PechaKucha Night Broome, Vol. 3, paper artist Jackie Cheng's works speak for themselves. Grounded in a traditional life, she humbly downplays her mesmerisingly imaginative and intricate paper art, sharing how it is a process of simplicity and quiet reflection. Enjoy!

Paper is Still Alive!

"Comics, illustration, photography, text, poetry, calligraphy, all media are welcome in Labo." In Paper is Still Alive, from PechaKucha Night Tokyo, Vol. 126, French illustrator, and Labo publisher, Julie Blanchin presents her experimental, beautifully silk screen handcrafted, limited edition magazine that brings together French and Japanese artists from all walks. Interestingly, Labo Magazine spawned from both inspiration and need, after Blachin's plans to write a book on a expedition to Antarctica with the Japanese Institute of Polar Research suddenly and unexpectedly fell through. Her storyboards leading up to the book became part of her blog, and would eventually became part of Labo. "Paper is still alive" she says, calling for new participants and collaborators. Get in touch with her to participate!

The Power of Paper

“I started to fold the paper boat and somehow I travelled around the world.” In The Power of Paper from PechaKucha Night Glasglow Vol. 28 Frank Bölter talks about his practice as an artist working with paper as a material to build boats and houses. He began using his work to challenge expectations both inside and outside the academic art world while a student at the Münster Academy of Art from 1998 to 2003. Boelter’s projects are distinguished equally by their powerful poetic imagery and by the precision of their execution, often carried out under the difficult conditions of the public sphere and galvanising the public into action.
