Closing the Outdoor Knowledge Gap

@ VOL 6 ON NOV 01, 2018

For those who grow up in the outdoors, it comes easy. It is much easier to be a competent skiier, or climber, or adventurer if you come at it from an early age. Yet contrary to popular belief, David Steele shows that old dogs CAN learn new tricks. The great benefit to a person trying something new is people who have been on that path before themselves. David shows that life can be challangeing and exciting for all of us at all stages of the journey, no matter if you are a cohort, a mentor, or an up-and-comer.

Adversity, Adventure and the Outdoors

@ VOL 6 ON NOV 01, 2018

"Adding insult to injury" is thankfully a phrase Rob Conte is unfamiliar with. Oh, he's had injuries: between his work life as a wildland firefighter and river guide, and his pastimes of mountian biking and snowboarding, injuries pretty much come with the territory. But Rob usually does not have to deal with the "insults", as his close network of family and friends supported him every step of the way as they "played through the pain" together.

PKN Charleston Vol. 3

Beach Front PKN in Tenerife

The Spanish island of Tenerife will soon be hosting its very first edition of PechaKucha Night (August 21), and based on photos I've seen (above, and also on PKN Tenerife's city page) of the Monkey Beach venue, it looks like attendees are in for a terrific outdoor evening of presentations.

PKN Istanbul Vol. 5

It's summer, and so you can of course expect to see plenty of outdoor PechaKucha Nights pop up here and there. Yesterday we posted that panoramic shot of Cleveland's outdoor PKN, and now here are a few photos from last month's PKN Istanbul Vol. 5, held at the Bir-Nokta terrace, and in conjunction with the Galata Design Fest.

PKN Christchurch + Global Cities Week

Christchurch is taking part in our Global Cities Week, with its "Cycle-Powered" PechaKucha Night Vol. 13 happening on February 26, and it will be the first outdoor PKN in Christchurch -- that week also marks the anniversary of the earthquake that tore through the city last year (February 22). Below, more details on the event from organizer Jessica Halliday.PechaKucha Night Christchurch 13 is our contribution to PK's Global Cities Week. Instead of making this a huge event, we've scaled it down. There will be seven or eight presentations. Our venue will be as eloquent as any of our speakers on the topic of Christchurch: we're holding this in association with Gap Filler, piggy-backing on their outdoor cycle cinema project on the former Cycle Trading and Printstop sites on the corner of Manchester St & Dundas St. Ride along at 8pm and be prepared to do your bit to power this event! The system can't take knobbly tires, so slip on your slicks and one of our volunteers will help you take a stand. See the Gap Filler website if you want to know more about how it works: This is the first outdoor PKN in Christchurch, with a bit of uncertainty involved (bad weather, power failure) but that's perfectly appropriate to the occasion. We can't promise a high level of comfort and we're not selling tickets or running a bar like we usually do; you will need to bring your own seating and refreshments. A coffee cart will be on site and Gap Filler will sell a few tasty treats. Entry is by koha and all donations will go to support Gap Filler. If it's looking like we'll get rained out, keep your eye out for a postponement notice and we'll hold it the following day. Huge thanks to the Gap Filler crew for having us.

Charting Sioux Falls Development, Creation Concepts of a Painter, and PKN Charleston Goes Outdoors

Presentations TJ Olson uses his presentation (from PKN Sioux Falls Vol. 1) to take us on a tour of the development of Sioux Falls, by way of Google Earth. This presentation (in Czech, from PKN Znojmo Vol. 1) by Paulina Ebringer covers various concepts used by the artist when preparing and painting portraits. Posters Today's additions to the Tumblr blog includes posters for PKN Charleston Vol. 15 (pictured above), PKN Las Palmas Vol. 8, and PKN Glasgow Vol. 11. That Charleston event was held last night, and we quickly started seeing photos all over Instagram of the outdoor PKN, with two examples pictured below (see larger versions here and here). Calendar Tonight (October 10) you can catch PKN Hawkes Bay Vol. 4 and PKN Auckland Vol. 31, while tomorrow takes the form of yet another big Thursday: PKN Salzburg Vol. 14, PKN Regensburg Vol. 10, PKN Augsburg Vol. 2, PKN Kosice Vol. 24, PKN Norrkoping Vol. 20, PKN Utrecht Vol. 5, PKN Omaha Vol. 16, and PKN Kyiv Vol. 9.

Urban Visionaries at PKN Auckland

For its next PechaKucha Night, Auckland is going outdoors in what sounds like a fantastic venue: Drawing upon the central theme of the evening, everyone’s favourite outdoor cinema in Silo Park will come alive after Pecha Kucha; Silo Cinema presents "The Human Scale", offering a critical view on the way we build and use our cities. Alongside regular Silo Markets and other events, Silo Park will continue to host the largest, free outdoor cinema each week over summer on a Friday evening. Read the rest of the article from Voxy to find out more about the planned PKN.

Huffington Post Looks at PechaKucha

Another round of great press coverage for PechaKucha, this time coming by way of The Huffington Post, with a piece that focuses on the PechaKucha Night series in Honolulu, while also touching on the overall global phenomenon that is PechaKucha. Ideas can be sexy, especially on a warm night in Hawai'i with the winds gently gusting after a soft rain. In the lee of the majestic Honolulu Museum of Art School, an outdoor auditorium had been created with an inflatable screen. Over a hundred thinkers had gathered to ponder new thoughts and images in the PechaKucha way. Read the full article here.

Summertime PechaKucha ...and the Livin' is Easy

Summer is upon PechaKucha (well, at least in the northern hemisphere), and what a better excuse to get your local Pechakucha City Organizer to host an outdoor summer series like PKN San Antonio did this week at the Arneson River Theatre in cooperation with Slab Cinema. Don't mess with Texas! (Photo by Scott Ball.)

Parkour: Dodging Obstacles

"We use the parks and gardens as outdoor gyms, and we use our bodies as obstacles to overcome. And I wasn't afraid to fail."  In Parkour: Dodging Obstacles from PechaKucha Night Beirut Vol. 25, Majed Medawar is a landscape architect and free-runner, amongst other things. In his talk, he tells us about his journey from gymnastics to parkour, from the gym to the outdoors and the city. Listen in to see how Parkour's philosophy and relationship to obstacles changed Majed's relationship to landscapes and challenges.
