Kitchen Counterpoint

BY JULIAN BEUTEL
@ VOL 35 ON SEP 06, 2018

And now for something really special.

Musician and composer Julian Beutel had a different idea of how to make use of the PechaKucha Night format. For this "talk", Julian did a live musical performance using a pre-recorded track he composed and did the sound effects right on stage. The piece itself revolves around a central space, the kitchen, and the cast of characters that use it. Julian developed Kitchen Counterpoint in collaboration with Angie Shyr and Seth Boyden.

Julian's performance was recorded live at PechaKucha Night Winnipeg Vol. 35, on September 6, 2018, at the Park Theatre.

Living Your Best (Art) Life

BY RAINE HAMILTON
@ VOL 38 ON JUN 06, 2019

Raine Hamilton is a singer-songwriter who has been working full-time as a musician for the last few years. She's been able to do so after learning how to fully break the chains of the "security myth" and commit to a way of living that unapologetically integrates what it is she wants to do for the rest of her existence. Raine shared that knowledge with us in her 20x20 talk, showing us that it is possible to live an art life and chart circumstance in your favour, as long as you have the gusto (and the right mindset) to do so.

Inspirational Coincidences

BY RACHEL MASON
@ VOL 2 ON OCT 16, 2014

Rachel Mason talks, sings, and strums about the place where art and life, or fiction and reality meet... While doing research for a musical performance and rock opera to get inside the mind of a child killer from the 1930's, she made contact with a man who killed and dismembered a boy in Borough Park. The experience profoundly effected her, and inspired her to write an opera incidentally about a coincidence - two men with the same name Hamilton Fish, died a day apart and their deaths were announced on a single front page. One man was a child-killing sadist, the other a politician from a distinguished political family.

Emily! Don't Do That!

BY EMILY PEASGOOD
@ VOL 11 ON SEP 06, 2018

"I use sound to express things that cause me frustration and joy. I find it cathartic and I find it so much fun. It makes frustrating things tolerable and fun things magical. For me, sound captures experience, truth, and memory in a way that no other sense can."

Despite the seemingly obstructive title, Emily Peasgood shows she is a risk-taking creative who throws caution to the wind (sometimes literally), experimenting with sound and social encounters, her work is original, thought-provoking and uplifting.

Call for Speakers

Malden Pechakucha Nights seeks speakers for our next Pechakucha Session to take place late March - date to be determined. The theme for this session is "FUSION" broadly interpreted. We are looking for presentations that present examples of fusion, “the process or result of joining two or more things together to form a single entity”, in various fields and disciplines. Talks can explore any number of disciplines that present the formation of a new concept, happening, culture, artform, initiative, etc that emerges out of the coming together of two or more influences – essentially giving birth to something new. We also welcome talks on the fusion refering to, “the process that powers the sun and the stars. It is the reaction in which two atoms of hydrogen combine together, or fuse, to form an atom of helium. In the process some of the mass of the hydrogen is converted into energy.” If you are interested in presenting in Malden, email Ose at yes@maldencreates.com with your pitch, a paragraph or so describing the topic and the types of images you would use. Date for this session will be forthcoming - most probably late March on a Thursday evening.
