New York: City on a Grid

@ VOL 7 ON DEC 04, 2015

Actor David Duchovny (!) says of Gerard Koeppel's new book: “ I’ve spent most of my life walking the straight lines of the world’s greatest city, and have never thought to ask: Is this a different shape from other cities, and if so, why, and who did it? Koeppel’s book answers these questions, in an easygoing, good-humored manner, with interesting facts unearthed on nearly every page. This is one of those books you always wished would be written, and here it is. Indispensable for anyone interested in the history of New York and cities generally, and bound to fuel cocktail conversations up, down, and across the city for years to come.”

Listen here for a whirlwind history of NY's grid as it develops!

Gerard Koeppel writes history, mostly New York related, but also in anything from magazines and journals to historical signage in city parks. He was also a captain of a charter sailboat, an awful law student, a licensed hack (out of a Greenwich Village taxi garage), and then, for many years, a radio reporter/writer/editor/producer, mostly with CBS News.

An Island of Beauty and Opportunity

@ VOL 19 ON NOV 15, 2013

Claire and Carly Weinberg, sisters and founders of Dulse & Rugosa, share their story of how they transformed the island they grew up on into a natural skin care business based on the botanicals grown on the island. Like most businesses, theirs was hard to start and they faced particular challenges with living on a remote island. The risk was worth taking since it meant they could recreate the unique island community.

Poster for PKN Bali Vol. 4

Keeping with the eco/sustainability theme that seems to be running through many a PechaKucha Night these days, PKN Bali Vol. 4 will be held in conjunction with the Serangan Island Green Festival -- the festival runs November 13-15, but the PKN will be on November 14, from 19:00.

It wasn't that long ago that we were celebrating having hit over 400 cities in the global PechaKucha city count -- it was back in April -- and here we are now at 426, with still more to add and register. At this rate, we may very well hit 500 by the end of the year. Here then is a list of the latest cities to join our big happy family: Fort Worth, Salt Spring Island, Blue Hill, Wakefield, Phillip Island, and New Plymouth.

Who says a PechaKucha Night can't be held in a chapel? In this post we share a few photos from last month's PechaKucha Night in Phillip Island Vol. 2, held at the Trenavin Chapel -- you'll find the full list of presenters on the event page. And as you'll see in the photos, the venue certainly didn't affect our PK tradition of "thinking and drinking." Please note that PKN Phillip Island Vol. 3 is set for February 19.

Little Island Management

In today's Presentation of the Day, "Little Island Management" from PKN Tokyo Vol. 67, Mari Kojima haphazardly, yet hilariously, speaks in a stream-of-consciousness fashion on her photography, her past, and her artistic themes. She elaborates on the idea that the photographer learns about his/her desires through the act of viewing and shooting the world with their instrument.
