Contrivances of Science and Life

BY DAVE MCCABE
@ VOL 10 ON AUG 28, 2014

Biotechnology can be understood as a transition from art to industry. There are amazing questions that will allow us to better understand the mechanisms that enable us to function. There are also real challenges that exist in providing scientists with the right tools, while makeing sure they ask the best questions. Dave McCabe highlights this transition from learning about mechanisms of life to developing tools that enable others to do better science.

IL FESTIVAL DELLA SCIENZA

BY MANUELA ARATA
@ VOL 10 ON OCT 31, 2014

BY EVELINA ISOLA
@ VOL 10 ON OCT 31, 2014

This project have been presented to the 12th edition of Genoa Science Festival, as a playful lab for kids. Do animals have perception of the time? According to some scientists, only humans have a real memory, while the other animals have a perception of the time limited or episodic. A different perception of time can have different utilities according to escape strategy, communication or feeding. Time and its perception are not relative only on physics books! This happens in a lot of very small animals, for example the flies that perceive the world with a slow motion effect.

In other species the perception of time is connected to their movement in the space, as in case of dolphin and bats biosonar. Children are conducted in a fascinating “time travel” in their time perceptions, from the perception that themselves have, to try out what other animals fell of time, according to the different utility in the survival strategies.

Complicating Things: Experimenting with Authority

BY PAUL VANOUSE
@ VOL 17 ON SEP 15, 2016

“I’m a bio media artist. And what that means is I work self-reflexively, with the tools and technologies of the life sciences.”

In Complicating Things: Experimenting with Authority from PechaKucha Buffalo vol. 17, Professor of Art at the University at Buffalo, Paul Vanouse, provides an overview of his work as a bio media artist. As Director of the newly created Coalesce Center for Biological Art at the University at Buffalo, Vanouse works with artists and philosophers and people who wouldn’t normally have a direct connection to do create work in a life sciences laboratory, and is actively engaged with Coalesce’s artist residency program. Vanouse’s own work has recently focused on DNA fingerprinting, removing the inherent layers of authority from DNA with an interest in the very visual representation of DNA. His recent projects, Latent Figure Protocol and Ocular Revision use molecular biology techniques to challenge “genome-hype” and to confront issues surrounding DNA fingerprinting.

PechaKucha London Vol 12 - Welcome! #PKNLDN12

GET YOUR £8 TICKET HERE   In July 2016 the Mayor of London launched the #LondonIsOpen campaign, sending a vibrant message to the world that London is a united city where everyone is welcome.    Pecha Kucha is proudly joining this campaign with our 12th London event: #PKNLDN12. Taking place at London's museum of the home, the Geffrye Museum, the evening will host inspirational talks from 12 speakers on the theme of WELCOME. It also happens during London Design Festival - an annual event showcasing London's design heritage, when the world's design community comes to town.   Hosting the evening is author and journalist Sarah Thompson. Among other subjects, Sarah has written about the surprising homes found in some particularly unwelcoming buildings, and about the mixed-up experience of welcoming a child into the world. Welcomed by Sarah, our 12 speakers will then offer their interpretation of the word WELCOME. In true Pecha Kucha style, each speaker has 20 seconds to talk us through 20 slides. With only six minutes to share their thoughts, talks are always fast, funny and fascinating.    Our wonderful line up of speakers includes -  Sarah Buxton / Observational Strategist / In 20 slides Sarah will explain how to tell a great story, to build a narrative that will conjure a feeling of instant connection, and a sense of belonging - no matter the medium you choose to use / http://observereffect.io/author/sarah/ Rachel South / Upholsterer / Drawing on her experience travelling and working with weavers in India, Central America and Europe, Rachael has added exciting flair to her approach to furniture and upholstery.
