Discovering The Value of Graphic Design
BY ELMA GIAVASES
@ VOL 4
ON APR 05, 2018
It is no easy take to create art, to somehow materialize and express the thoughts in your head. Creating art expressing the thoughts in someone ELSE's head is something else entirely. Elma Giavases' early life and subsequent travels around the globe have given her a unique perspective on design and branding, and she now brings that expertise to the Kalispell community as a graphic designer with Highline Design.
After all, "great designs delight".

Schwepunkt in 3D
When May Groppo sent in her report for last month's PechaKucha Night in Buenos Aires Vol. 14, she mentioned that guests were handed 3D glasses at the door in order to experience the 3D imagery from Schwerpunkt's presentation. Above, what the scene looked like.

PKN Vancouver Posters
We've long been fans of Vancouver's creative use of the PechaKucha swirl -- you can see quite a few examples of the PKN Vancouver "tree" motif if you look through our Vancouver posts -- and now we finally get to see the imagery once it's been printed. Looks great on black, don't you think?

Poster for PKN Guadalajara Vol. 10
PechaKucha Night in Guadalajara Vol. 10 happens next week (November 30), at the Dona Diabla Cantina. Organizer Alavaro Ramirez sends in the poster you see above, a modern take on folkloric imagery.

Posters for PKN Bialystok Vol. 1
Last week marked the launch of PechaKucha Night in Bialystok, and to commemorate the occasion -- and to help get the word out -- they produced a series of posters and imagery, which you'll find in this post. Curious to see who presented? Take a look at the official event page.

PKN Marseille on the Beach
That beautiful imagery you see above? That's where this past weekend's PechaKucha Night in Marseille-Provence Vol. 16 was held (La cabane du Roucas). This is just a tease (taken by Greg Hessman), and we'll soon be sharing photos from the event itself.

PKN Regensburg Vol. 6
The latest PechaKucha Night in Regensburg (Vol. 6) was held not too long ago, and here we have a few photos showing off some of the presentation imagery, courtesy of organizer Florian Toperngpong.

Tokyo Genso
You may have seen the works of Tokyo Genso before -- his "overgrown Tokyo" imagery was all over the blogosphere last year -- and here's a presentation from the artist himself, recorded at PechaKucha Night in Tokyo Vol. 88.

365 Special Cards and Event Flyers in Mendoza
Lindsay Hoyt has a collection of 365 cards, one for each day of the year. Watch her presentation (from PKN Grand Rapids Vol. 2) to learn more about this intriguing series. Martín Rios produces flyers and imagery for local electronic music artists and events, and in this presentation (in Spanish, from PKN Mendoza Vol. 3) he shares some of his favorite works.

Information Retrieval
"Information Retrieval" is the title of an on-going series of works by Geraldine Lau. The art is inspired by maps, plans, and elevations; both contemporary and antique. In her presentation (at PKN Tokyo Vol. 97) we find out how she processes imagery and data to create new works -- be it a drawing, an infographic chart, or an art spoof collage.

Depicting the Circle Hunt
Artist Carrie Walker is inspired by historical "circle hunts" -- in which hunters would form a circle around a large portion of land and slowly close in, killing every animal they came across. Carrie found rich imagery in descriptions of these events, and had a desire to depict the now-forgotten animals. In "Depicting the Circle Hunt" from PKN Richmond, BC Vol. 3, we see how she embarked on a road trip to recreate scenes which she skillfully translated onto paper.
