Rebuilding Local Trust in Government

BY ROHIT MALHOTRA
IN ATLANTA

Community is so much bigger than one's individual self and this is something that seems to have been forgotten here in the US of A. Rohit Malhotra's grandfather was a hero of his, a teacher in a remote village in India, who instilled this ideal of what community is, in him as a small child. The polar opposites of 'community' and of 'government' (at least after this election) are what Rohit grew up loving. Listen as he speaks about the importance of local government and trust has in our communities.

Local Heroes

Hop hop hop! The Weimar co-op is going on well forward! With the new poster designed by Tereza we took off to catch the attention of potential speakers for the first PKN in Weimar. The response is good: we already gathered 6 confirmations from presenters which gives a nice minimum for a good PechaKucha to take place! This means there are only 6 more places left as we think to limit the evening to 12 presentations. At some special point we will also connect with Tokio during the Global Wave!

Be Someone's Hero

Every government keeps criminal records, but why don't we keep records of goodness? An expert in creative leadership, Stephie Knopel lends her expertise to invent a new way to say thank you. With her web app creation, Personal Heroes, users are able to thank strangers for random acts of kindness. In "Be Someone's Hero" from PKN Tokyo Vol. 114, we see that the app also allows users to geotag their heroes, mapping our world in a different way -- with an index of good, rather than bad.

Considered a place where "nothing ever happens", Dutton challenges us not to overlook the quiet town, or the contemporary, often abstract works coming from any of its highly gifted artists. Enjoy!

Tracball Heros

"I often describe Tracball as a combination of tennis, badminton, soccer, basketball, curling, waterpolo, chess, and sailing." In "Tracball Heros" from PechaKucha Night Beacon Vol. 3, famed Tracball Legend Richard McElroy III stands in for Liam Goodman to (comedically) elucidate us on the fabled past and historical roots of the ancient "sport" of TracBall, shining a spotlight on the legends of the game (himself included). If you're not laughing by the time his story leads to a nearly fatal injury, after which McElroy was saved by scrapbooking (!) which unexpectedly lead him to a life of Tracball philanthropy(!!), you will be when, in closing, he coerces the crowd to sing him Happy 40th Birthday. (Performance Comedy at its finest.)
