Digital Choc 2013

@ VOL 99 ON JAN 23, 2013

In 2012, the French Institute in Tokyo organized the first edition of Digital Month, a festival designed to highlight French creativity in the fields of digital cultures and new images. This event reached a wide and diverse audience by presenting all aspects of digital creation, from contemporary art to moving images, architecture to video games, and also digital publishing, contemporary music and performing arts. After the success of this first 2012 edition, the French Institute of Japan reiterates the digital experience by organizing Digital Choc, the second edition of this festival, in February 2013.

Through the theme of "digital territories," the 2013 edition would like to explore areas that digital technologies has disrupted, influenced or revolutionized. Artworks proposed in this digital arts festival are to be presented in several cities in the French cultural network in Japan (5 institutes IFJ, 4 French Alliances), and partners (concert halls, shops, cinemas, galleries, etc.)

A French Magazine About Graphic Design and Painted Fantasy Worlds

Presentations Alexandre Dimos is a French graphic designer, and in his presentation (from PKN Tokyo Vol. 95) he talks about Back Cover. As he explains, he couldn't find what he really wanted to read in France, and so he helped create an independant magazine focusing on thinking and analyzing graphic design and typographic practices, and to a larger extent, visual arts. Miro Pecho is a Slovak painter, and he uses his presentation (in Czech, from PKN Znojmo Vol. 1) to explain how different fantasy worlds influence his paintings. Posters We have two new posters on the Tumblr blog today, starting with PKN Malaga Vol. 3, pictured above (the event was held last night). The other addition is for PKN New Orleans Vol. 7, which is happening tomorrow night.  The image below is not a poster or a flyer, but rather part of a call for presenters for the next PKN in Genoa (or Genova), and we loved it so much we wanted to share it. All roads lead to PechaKucha! The event itself will take place on November 23. Calendar There are two PKNs on the agenda tonight (October 3), PKN Bilbao Vol. 13 and PKN Szczecin Vol. 1. Greetings from the Colonies: Postcards from a Painful Past

"Some [postcards] promoted colonial ideology and served to uphold the supposed hierarchy of the world, with white societies on top." The Golden Age of postcards (1907-1915) coincided with the popularization of anthropology and renewed interest in European colonies. Colonial postcards from this time illustrate some of the most prominent ideas of colonialism and beliefs regarding ethnic hierarchy. In Greetings from the Colonies: Postcards from a Painful Past from PechaKucha Night Maastricht Vol. 27, writer and scholar Inge Oosterhoff retraces these ideas, as well as the ways in which France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and other colonizing countries viewed and propagandized their “colonized peoples.”
