Sofubi: Soft Vinyl

"When I say factory, it's often a 60 or 70-year old guy who has a shed out by the side of his house. He's pouring the the plastisol, and running it through the process, pulling out the pieces by hand, one by one."

In Sofubi: Soft Vinyl from PechaKucha Night Special @ Autodesk Pop-Up in TokyoDon Kratzer discusses soft vinyl as a medium, and particularly soft vinyl toys made in Japan. Versatile and vibrant, it has been used for generations as a medium for making toys and figurines that is proven to last. With advancements in digital technology, new opportunities are presented to those who design sofubi figures and collectibles.

A Figure Explosion, Mechanical Sumo Wrestlers, and Kosice Gets Covered

Presentations Don "datadub" Kratzer updates us (from PKN Tokyo Vol. 92) on his five year mission that kicked off while attending the San Diego Comic Con back in 2007, and then lead to some terrific toy/figure collaborations with a host of creators.  Kenichi Asano is a sculptor, but not in the traditional sense, even though his very modern-looking works are all produced using traditional Japanese construction techniques. The presentation (also from PKN Tokyo Vol. 92) is in Japanese, but the visuals really do all the talking. Posters Today we highlight two posters that were added to the Tumblr blog yesterday, for PKN Kosice Vol. 18 (held last week) and the upcoming PKN Kosice Vol. 19 (June 16). Both were produced by Jozef Tušan, and you'll find more of his work in this Flickr photostream. Photos and report We continue our coverage of PKN Kosice, and so along with those posters you'll also find plenty of photos from previous events in these Facebook photo galleries. We're sure Vol. 18 will be added soon, and here are a few words from PKN Kosice team member Miso Hudak on the event that was:Volume 18 was part of the local street art festival "Use the City." We love to cooperate with meaningful projects, and we earned great synergy from this partnership. It was an open-air event, and even though it was cold with strong winds, we had almost 150 people in audience. Volume 18 was absolutely an international event, with Russian, Italian, German, Moldavian, and French projects presented in English. There was a French guy speaking Slovak, and a Slovak dance group speaking in the language of bodies. And here's what to expect at this month's Vol. 19:Volume 19 will be a special event, where art communities from the second and third largest cities in Slovakia (Kosice and Presov) will join together in the middle. The distance between these cities is only 30 kilometers, and the event will be in an old brick factory. The lineup for Volume 19 will be completely opposite of Volume 18's, as we are going to celebrate local organizations, which bring culture and art to both of our cities.Calendar What's on the agenda tonight? How about the following events: PKN Louisville Vol. 8, PKN Chicago Vol. 22, PKN Sydney Vol. 21, and PKN Katowice Vol. 7. Tomorrow (June 6), look to the following cities: PKN Coquitlam Vol. 7, PKN Bielefeld Vol. 10, PKN Genoa Vol. 2, PKN Aarhus Vol. 13, and PKN Edmonton Vol. 13.

After seeing the destruction unleased upon the Tohoku region, Japanese toy-maker Takashi Tsunoda was compelled to do something creative, constructive.  In today's Presentation of the Day, "Play-Deco" from PKN Tokyo, Vol. 92, Takashi (of Twelvetone, or Magnote in English) discusses his passion for developing simple, customizable wood and paper figures and toys. He has added elements of creativity to his figures by allowing owners to design their own papercraft exteriors. His hope is that by allowing children to develop their own modifications to their playthings, they might learn the power of creation.
