Mindful Play

BY DEE WAGNER
@ VOL 28 ON FEB 21, 2016

Dee Wagner joins us to discuss mindful play and how it may be used in place of the third reaction style that follows the two known reactions "fight" & "flight"... The third is "shutdown" and is a reposnse when neither 'fight' not 'flight' are an option... Mindful play has its roots in the polyvagal theory and Dee walks us through responses, the nexus of her mindful play approach, and peppers it all with her own personal story.

BY PHILIP SMITH

In How to Fight Darkness from PechaKucha Night Stockholm Vol. 54Philip Smith poses the question, "How will we fight the dark powers and the evil galactic empire together?" PKN Barcelona Planting Trees

PechaKucha Night in Barcelona recently teamed up for a new eco project with Tree-Nation in which they are planting one tree for each of its presenters. PKN Barcelona organizer Petz Scholtus explains: Pecha Kucha Barcelona is planting trees: it’s fun, and the trees fight poverty, desertification, deforestation, and climate change. For Vol. 5, we partnered up with Tree-Nation, and from now on every speaker will be given a tree that is planted in the growing heart-shaped forest in the Nigerian desert. The trees are virtually planted over the internet, where you can see it grow, water it, add photos, and connect to other trees and their people while a real tree grows in Tree-Nation’s plantation. Here is a direct link to Pecha Kucha Barcelona’s forest. Check out and join Tree-Nation, the biggest free Internet social network with the objective of planting trees.

Presenter Bio: Fredy

Fredy is Congolese by nationality, but since 2014 has been in exile in Malawi.  His family values of education and service for humanity led him to dedicate his efforts to fight for a noble cause: denouncing the human rights abuses in the Congo. Since coming to Malawi Fredy has experienced life in a refugee camp.  Discouraged by the multiple legal, socio-economic, socio-cultural, and psychological bounderies that refugees are faced with, Fredy and his brother saw enormous potential in the youth at the camp and founded Salama Africa in 2014. Only two years later, Salama Africa has promoted youth who were nominated vice-champions in a national-wide dance competition, youth who won the Malawi’s Got Talent competition, and have attracted attention of American filmmakers who produced a documentary about their work. This has been a renaissance of Fredy's desire to serve, and also a fresh start for the youth who are developing their potential and living just some of their dreams. Forced, and forged, Fredy has experienced many new beginnings.
