Not Exactly Chit Chat

@ VOL 12 ON OCT 29, 2014

Not exactly chit chat: An architect's rant on the Santa Barbara Design Review process.
Nils Hammerbeck is an architect who lived in Santa Barbara from 2001-2008. He then got disenchanted with a town that felt like Disney Land due to the design process feeling like a fight against the vulgarities of suburbia. Facing a mid-life crisis in career choice in the midst of the recession, he left for the good part of 4 years, building with bamboo at festivals around the world and living in Costa Rica where the design process is far more free than here. He’s now back living in S.B., has opened a local office again, and just needs to vent a few things about local politics...He hopes that you save your tomatoes for soup...

What I Would Do with an Extra Day

@ VOL 24 ON FEB 20, 2016

When faced with contemplating his last day on earth, Social Media Todd panicked. In this entertaining talk he weighs up the selfish and the altruistic - pitting his competing urges to kiss his wife or ruin people's golf games against each other, he ends up entreating us all to make the most of each and every day regardless of whether you have another one tomorrow, or not.

What I Would Do with an Extra Day

@ VOL 24 ON FEB 20, 2016

Artist Dom Breadmore considers what he would, or should, do if he were given a final extra day. There are endless possibilities but he finds good reasons not to do most of them and rants about people who set themselves time-based challenges in order to bend the rules. All this leads him to wonder about the nature of time and how it was probably invented 'to make sure everything didn't happen all at once'. Dom ends by asking us in turn to consider what we might gain from slowing down and making the most of our 24hours.

Circular Economy

@ VOL 26 ON SEP 28, 2018

Circular economy is a concept that has attracted great attention globally in the past decade or so. Many countries and regions are developing strategies and action plans to make their economies circular--moving away from the traditional linear extract, produce, consume, dispose model. They want to create economies where there is less reliance on non-renewable resources such as virgin minerals, fossil fuels, harmful emissions, and the like. The presentation by Alen Amirkhanian will show how this is supposed to happen and what it means for Armenia.

Turning Air Into Water, Surfboard/Scene Design, and the Carrot Pavillion

Presentations Richard Groden is one of the founders of Island Sky, and in his presentation (from PKN Miami Vol. 15), he talks about its project to extract water from air and turn it into pure drinking water for areas where water is scarce or contaminated. Their goal is not just to produce drinkable water, but also to educate people on the important of sustainability in developing countries. Martín Várbaro is a plastic material artist who started his career by designing surfboards in Argentina, and later in more Latin American countries, including Peru and Brazil. As this presentation (in Spanish, from PKN Mar Del Plata Vol. 2) reveals, he also works as a scene decorator for theaters, museums, and public centers, and is now producing work in South America and Europe. Posters We have no new posters to share on the Tumblr blog today, but that gives us a chance to highlight the beach-friendly poster from last week's PKN Las Palmas Vol. 7. Photos and report We've got galleries for two firsts to share (in Castellon and Augsburg), but let us also point you to this blog post from Core77 about a recent PechaKucha event in London, part of the International Conference on Designing Food and Designing for Food. It was produced by PKN Brussels organizer Alok Nandi, and the photo above reveals the intriguing "Carrot Pavillion." PKN Castellon de la Plana Vol. 1 [Facebook]PKN Augsburg Vol. 1 [Facebook]Calendar We're kicking off the week with the re-start of the PKN series in Bangkok, with the city's Vol. 5 happening tonight (July 9).
