The Art of Drinking

In "The Art of Drinking" from Tokyo's Brazilian Lifestyle Powered by PechaKucha, Bartender Rogerio Igarashi Vaz shares a facinating perspective on how the collision of Eurpoean, African, and aboriginal cultures of his native Brazil, informs much of his mixology philosophy and many of the drinks he serves up in his century-old-motiffed 12-seat bar in fashionable Ebisu, Tokyo. He talks about the more emphemeral duties of a Bartender while ellaborating on his shared love for twisting old world cocktails into re-imagined modern versions, sometimes even using the most unlikely of incredients, from bacon to seaweed, often substituting a classic drink's base with Brazil's distilled sugarcane spirit, Cachaça!

He signs off by saluding "Bartenders are tring to make a better world ...through Cocktails!"

Over the past six years of PechaKucha Night events, there have been countless stabs at PKN cocktails. James Lane sends us this version he spotted at PKN Sacramento: I'd like to announce that the organizers here in Sacramento, California have designed (and drunk) possibly the first drink called "The Pecha Kucha." We hold our events at a Thai Lounge and the owner designed it for us. I'm not a bartender so I don't know all the ingredients, but it involves lighting Bacardi 151 on fire. From Street Art to Hitchhiking, with a Bit of Birch Sap Drinking in Gothenburg

Here's our look at what's happening today in PechaKucha. Presentations We've got two new presentations on the site, one from Curitiba and one from St. Louis. In "The Street Is Alive" (in Portuguese), Jorge Galvao shares his graffiti work, and talks about his passion for street art, and then in "Hitchhiking for Sanity," Myles Dickason shares some of his hitchhiking adventures. You can also find all Gothenburg presentations (in Swedish) on its YouTube channel. On April 24th, we arranged our Vol. 31 of PechaKucha Gothenburg with a great turnout! Annelie Hulthén used mobile photos to show some of the backsides of the life of a politician. Our new city architect showed aerial photos of Gothenburg to show how much space is wasted on cars instead of human beings. Peter Korn told us about digging and how to plant exotic plants on stony Swedish hillsides. Sushi chef José Seruda spoke about "omakase" and his idea of Scandinavian sushi using locally produced fish and seafood. Siv Burell talked about the language Esperanto which celebrates 125 years this year. Klara Hansson spoke about perma culture and what's edible within the city centre. Jeanette Fagerström told the story that led up to her opening a sewing machine café in Gothenburg (similar to an internet café but with sewing machines instead of computers). Helena Andersson, Sebastian Popescu & Evelina Valtersson finished of the evening with a presentation about their project "Bostadsrotation" (residential rotation) where people change housing and routines with another person for a couple of days. In the break, Klara Hansson and her friends served up a 'Kokoro salad' based on wild city plants such as Garlic-mustard, Celandine, Common wood sorrel, Dandelion, Sorrel, Lady's Mantle, Daisy, Rowan Leaf, Ground elder and last but not least Lovage. They also served fresh natural birch sap. In this walkthrough video during the beer break, organizer Jesper Larsson tries out the birch sap and talks to former presenter Sebastian Näslund about it. From Japanese Graffiti to Drain Spotting

In today's "Presentation of the Day, Remo Camerota takes us through his brilliant book on Japanese graffiti, and on to his follow-up release (which wasn't out at the time this presentation was done) on Japanese manhole covers, titled Drain Spotting. Remo currently has a Kickstarter campaign for a new project.

Listening to Popcorn

The nefarious, hidden underworld of popcorn is out there; you just have to keep your ears to the ground. Is popcorn just a delicious snack to enjoy or is there some deeper meaning to be discovered? In "Listening to Popcorn" from PKN Sharjah Vol. 4, Rami Salame, an enthusiast for investigation and popcorn, cracks down on the mystery shrouded around popcorn and seeks to uncover the truth of its existence. Listen as he explains his comical deduction of popcorn's unlikely relationship to typewriters and accordions.

Drink Wine, Eat Chocolate

"Getting more pleasure, and enjoying [life] more, together." Good motto. Contemporary Swedish glass designer Åsa Jungnelius is interested in what is considered genuine or fake, and how value is created around an object. In "Drink Wine, Eat Chocolate" from a special Swedish Style x PechaKucha edition of PKN Tokyo (Vol. 66), we see that Åsa often uses stereotypes as a language that informs her design theory, and challenges the conventional meaning of these formulae.

In "You Can Only Keep What You Have by Giving it Away" from PKN New Orleans Vol. 12 hear Graison go deep on his love for his work. 


Who's Driving this Thing?!

So really, who's driving this thing?!    Now that the first of our events in under our belts we want to reach out and tell you a little about why we are excited about PKN!   First at bat - Crystal Gale Phelps!   Hey - I'm Crystal - an artist and lady-boss here in Toledo. I jumped into organizing PKN as a volunteer in 2010 because I experienced PKN in other cities and thought Toledo could benefit from the experience. Toledo deserves an event format that is not stuffy and full of pressure - an event with the ability to share their ideas in a relaxed way. Nothing else here is quite like it, making it a great fit for Toledo.    Next up - the rookie - Maureen Brogan!   Hey! I'm Maureen - a facebook posting, event planning, dance party destroying geek in Toledo. I met Crystal through a friend named Kim - another lady-boss and former organizer of PKN Toledo. I showed up at their event hosted at Toledo Museum of Art and knew I wanted to be a part of the awesome feeling this event brings to my city. Born and raised in Toledo I grew up with the idea that there was nothing to do here. As I become an adult (let's be honest - it's an ongoing process for us all) I continue to meet amazing people making things happen. Forget that boring idea that there is nothing to do - make your own waves! I'm excited for the wave PKN has made and will continue to make here in Toledo!
