Beware the Calendar

@ VOL 24 ON MAR 30, 2018

There’s a powerful story being told over and over that influences the way most people experience life here on this planet. It’s so deeply ingrained at this point that the vast majority of folks alive today may never come to question it. In this talk, Giuliana Serena invites us to get curious about how the way we track time influences our experience of it, and how we might learn to connect more fully with nature by attuning ourselves to the cycles of the moon, the sun, and our own bodies.

GRAUSTUFEN — Podcast für Design und Gesellschaft

@ VOL 2 ON JUN 22, 2018

Her presentation (in Italian) is from PKN Pisa Vol. 1. Posters There are two new posters on the Tumblr blog today, one for PKN Vladimir Vol. 6 (pictured above) and one for PKN Geneva Vol. 7, both happening tommorrow night. A Design Conspiracy in Stripes, Sustainable Urbanism, and 2006 Revisited

Presentations Here's how Joachim Müller-Lancé describes his presentation (from last night's PKN Tokyo Vol. 93): "I've discovered a design conspiracy which plans to take over the world. They place secret signals everywhere, and I will present the evidence." Alen Amirkhanian teaches environmentally sustainable urbanism and engineering, and his presentation (from PKN Istanbul Vol. 14) is about compelling work done internationally to understand the human global impact on the planet. He also talks about work he is undertaking to address these global issues at a local level. Poster There are no new additions to the Tumblr blog today, so instead we highlight the poster for tomorrow night's PKN Gainesville Vol. 4, which was added a few days ago.  Last night we had our 93rd PKN in Tokyo -- we'll have plenty of photos to share in about a week -- and we are currently in 537 cities. What you see above is a screenshot from the PechaKucha website 6 years ago, to the day, listing the PKN that was happening that night in Tokyo, Vol. 34. On the left-hand side, that's the entire city list as it stood in June 2006, all 14 cities. It certainly is amazing to think how far we've gone in such a short period of time. Calendar As we mentioned yesterday, it's a big Thursday, with the following events on tap: PKN Mallorca Vol. 1, PKN Bordeaux Vol. 7, PKN Geneva Vol. 7, PKN London Vol. 7, and PKN Vladimir Vol. 6. Indonesian Batik, Skateboarding as a Life Philosophy, and an Illustrated Crowd in Longmont

Presentations UNESCO designated Indonesian Batik as a "Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity" on October 2, 2009. As Yudhinia Venkanteswari explains in her presentation (from PKN Tokyo Vol. 93), what distinguishes it from other manual wax-resist dyeing technique is that traditional Indonesian Batik uses "canting," a bamboo pen with copper wax container, as a tool to draw a pattern with melted wax on a piece of cloth. Another technique used is "cap," which is to create a shape of melted wax with a copper stamp. The waxing and dyeing is then repeated to get the desired colored patterns. Pablo Martínez has won numerous skateboarding championships in Argentina, Chile, Brazil, and Uruguay, and has adapted skateboarding to his own philosophy of life, which he shares with his sons. In this presentation (in Spanish, from PKN Mar Del Plata Vol. 2), he talks about how great it is to travel with them around the world for skateboarding. Photos Kicking off the week, we have a few photo galleries to share from around the web, some larger than others. The photos above are all from last week's PKN Bordeaux Vol. 7.
