From rugby to social empowerment in Romania

BY LUCIAN MIRCESCU
@ VOL 26 ON APR 09, 2015

Lucian Mircescu is actively involved in development matters in Romania. A few years ago, he launched the Rugby Club Aurora Baicoi Foundation, which he is using now as a social development platform.

Last year he organised the club's first summer school, where he spent one week with children from 8-14, teaching them maths and English with Duolingo and the Khan Academy.

It's a project that is gaining more and more attention. His story can be one of social empowerment and community participation in the context of the Romanian migration taking place after the country gained European Union membership.

Some of the children in the club simply grow up without any parents, who are working abroad. The children are rarely encouraged to focus on their education and to pursue careers that require studying - which only repeats an eventual poverty cycle.

"Deus Ex Machina," "Hliehhan," "The Book," and Me

BY JIM JENKINS
@ VOL 4 ON AUG 11, 2016

Commissioned by the Aurora (Illinois) Public Library to produce a piece of public sculpture that illustrates the intersection of art and technology, James G. Jenkins produced three distinct yet related works of art: an outdoor public sculpture, an indoor “time machine / desk,” and a large medieval manuscript-like, artist-made book of collages. The latter work, which the artist describes as “graphplotfictionfacttotems,” illustrates the journey of creation, fabrication, and installation of the artworks at the library. It is an intentional, repetitiously redundant, self-referential echo.

A Goodbye Message from Petz Scholtus

As we mentioned in that previous post about PechaKucha Night in Barcelona Vol. 14, it was the last edition for organizer Petz Scholtus (again, pictured above, in a photo by Benjamin Julve), and she sends in the following goodbye message to the PechaKucha community:I just want to send out a huge thank you to everyone who made PechaKucha Barcelona what it is today. It has been an incredible adventure to set up and run PKN in the Catalan Capital with the support of my friends, the over 170 presenters, fans, and our audience. I had a lot of fun, met amazing people and have seen curious things in the 3 years of PKN BCN. Mark, Astrid, Jean and everyone else at PK headquarters were incredible to work with, as were Sergio Carratalá, Ernest Vidal, Benjamin Julve, Ricardo Ferraz, Aurora Portillo, Aniol Esquerra, Nayely González and Marjolein Hendrix in Barcelona. Together we did over 14 nights since July 2008 when it all started here. Also on board since the beginning was our local beer, Estrella Damm, whose Antigua Fábrica has somewhat become the house of PechaKucha in Barcelona. They say that all good things must end (I am hoping to present my new project to you in a PKN next year) and so I decided to pass on PKN BCN to the hyperactiveee Marc Morro, known as the guy behind Surtido and the Gallery Otras Cosas. I am very pleased to leave it in Marc's hands and am looking forward to the events next year. Fins aviat, Petz Scholtus PS: If you want to stay in touch, please follow me on Twitter, I am @petzdelux
