(Un)Conventional Wisdom – Going Against the Grain

@ VOL 5 ON MAR 29, 2018

While researching 18th century mechanical tables by J. F. Oeben [pronounced O-Ben], J. Leko has been nearly kicked-out of such notable museums as the National Gallery of Art (Washington, D.C.), the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), Cognacq-Jay, Musée de Nissim de Camondo, and the Louvre (Paris), Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam), and the Victoria and Albert Museum (London). Actually, the Louvre did turn him away, come to think of it…

He occasionally teaches others and accepts commissions to build things for people that require far too much time!

South China Morning Post Covers PKN Hong Kong

PechaKucha Night in Hong Kong Vol. 5 happens tonight (June 17) at One Bar -- have a look at the flyer -- and it's great to see that the event garnered some coverage in the days leading up to the latest edition in HK's leading English newspaper, the South China Morning Post. We love this quote, from co-organizer Oriana Reich: PechaKucha is part of an awakening that Hong Kong and the design community is having about the need to be more open and more willing to give different people an opportunity to share what they do. It's a sign that people want to come out of the woodwork, that they sense there's something going on. Hong Kong has some pretty exceptional talent. It deserves a PechaKucha.

PechaKucha Night Manchester Vol. 19 - 'Lessons'

PechaKucha Night Manchester Vol. 19 - 'Lessons' We're going back to school for PechaKucha Night Manchester Vol. 19. Inspired by the start of the new academic term, we thought we'd focus on what lessons our speakers can teach us over the course of the evening. So if you've ever fancied learning how to be a calligraphist or wondered about whether we can or should love robots, or had aspirations of being a comedian, then this PechaKucha is for you. All of our speakers will be taking the PechaKucha 20x20 challenge: 20 slides, 20 seconds per slide, no stopping. For Vol. 19 we're going to PLANT, NOMA's latest development following the awesome Pilcrow Pub, now overseen by our friends, and PechaKucha alumni, OH OK Ltd. PLANT offers everyone the chance to learn a new skill through their wonderful array of free and cheap workshops. The only condition: whatever you do has to make Manchester greater. On the night you'll get to play with ceramics and see PLANT NOMA'S drawing robot in action. Plus, we'll have Emma Reynolds who will draw your portrait in 3 minutes. And finally, our resident photographer Fiona Finchett will be presenting her latest exhibition on the wall space around the venue. So get down early to check out all that's on offer. The doors open at 19:00 and the talks start at 19:30. We'll have a beer break just after 20:00. The talks should be finished by around 21:00 where you'll have a chance to mingle afterwards before inevitably heading across to The Pilcrow Pub for last orders.    Speakers Joyce Lee - Calligraphist Chris Tavner - Comedian  Dr Scott Midson - Postdoctoral Research Associate, The Lincoln Theological Institute Matthew Shribman - Science Presenter, Innovation Consultant, Musician and Tutor Rhys Archer - Researcher PhD student and founder, Women of Science Duncan Craig - Founder, Survivors Manchester Matthew Holmes - The Derelict Explorer Sue Platt and Robert Hamilton - The Society of the Spectacles   Thanks Thanks as ever to our paper sponsors, G . F Smith.   About PLANT, NOMA PLANT is a neighbourhood design studio. Inside you'll find woodwork, ceramics, and sewing, wood, clay, and cloth. Through workshops, masterclasses and exhibitions in collaboration with you, the public, we hope to give something back to the city. Something that will make Manchester an even better place to be.
