Rap Mapping and the Everyday

BY LIZ TESTON
@ VOL 12 ON AUG 19, 2014

This conceptual project is steeped in both community engagement and storytelling as an investigative tool. As studio critic Jennifer Bonner outlined in ATL: A Guide to the Dirty South, there is a rivalry in east coast and west coast design, like the rivalry between east coast and west coast rap. The importance of cultural identity and community through narrative are essential in the South - so much that legends are accepted simply because they they convey moral lessons. There is a paradox in storytelling and fact, but not in legitimacy. Liz Teston explores the role of placemaking within the cultural context of Atlanta and it's rap history.

PechaKucha is Grand and Rapid in Grand Rapids

The latest edition of PechaKucha night in the rip-roarin' Michigan city of Grand Rapids (Vol. 6) came and went, and a quick recap of the night was recorded in The Rapidian. Here's a small tidbit from the article: Humorous and serious, honest and ultimately real, PKGR provides neutral ground, an environment where any one of us can share our passions, our stories or a little bit of ourselves. PKGR also gives the audience the opportunity to discover the unknown, rethink the familiar and to get lost in the story. Because when it really comes down to it, life is all about the stories. We couldn't have said it better ourselves. Check out the full article here.
