The Home Stretch: Ending Family Homelessness in Dane County

BY SARAH CEPONIS
@ VOL 25 ON FEB 15, 2018

Over 500,000 people reside in Dane County, but not all of those people actually have a place to call home. United Way and its partner agencies have made great strides over the past decade in ensuring homelessness is rare and brief, but there is still important work to be done-and if we each step up to play a part, we can end family homelessness here.

Running the Tokyo Marathon for Home for All

PechaKucha and Klein Dytham architecture co-founder Mark Dytham is a man on a mission. He's been training for months to run in the 2014 Tokyo Marathon, and this Sunday he'll do just that, but he's also running for a cause: Home for All.  Home for All is a growing project developed by Pritzker Prize winning architect Toyo Ito to build community centres in the areas most greatly affected by the disasters of March 2011.  Your contributions will go toward the creation of a future community space in Tohoku and will assist in the maintenance of this vital organization -- support Mark and Home for All by checking out his Indiegogo campaign page!

Otsukare!

That big thumbs up says it all. You've heard the story -- as told at last Thursday's PechaKucha Night Tokyo Vol. 111 -- and hopefully you've been to the Indiegogo page (and there's still plenty of time to offer your support), but what you see here is worth more than words. We here at PechaKucha HQ are all incredibly proud of Mark's amazing journey over the past half year, as he started training to run the Tokyo Marathon, which he achieved mere hours ago. From no running to crossing the finishing line at a marathon in just 6 months is something that -- just like many a great PechaKucha presentation -- is there to inspire. The rest of this post includes photos taken by Mark along the way, as he received support from PechaKucha and Klein Dytham architecture staff to keep him going. And as you can read more of in this post, the run was also part of Mark's efforts to raise money for "Home for All," a reconstruction project to help revitalize areas affected by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan -- you can still contribute to his Indiegogo campaign over the next month. Let's do this! It's not difficult to spot Joseph, a regular at the Tokyo Marathon, and a good friend of PechaKucha. Being greeted by Klein Dytham architecture office manager Yoshiko, and her husband. Some big cheering from PechaKucha co-founder Astrid, and Klein Dytham architecture's Hisayama. PechaKucha's Johnny and Luis, along with their partners, offer some big cheers. A great day for a run. The whole family of joins in the cheering: "Run papa, run! Some more support from Klein Dytham architecture. The moment of truth.

And thanks to the Indiegogo campaign and my PechaKucha presentation, 'Home for All' has also received an additional donation of ¥3,000,000, making a total of ¥4,000,000 -- yay! There are still a lot of projects to be funded so if you haven't donated yet there are 48 hours left on my Indiegogo campaign -- and now you can also donate through PayPal. Our building for "Home For All" in Soma City will break ground on April 8. Thank you all so much for helping to bring so much positivity to Tohoku!

We are SOLD OUT! Vol 10 Pecha Kucha Night 'HOME'

In just a few days we will be heading along to the Geffrye Museum on Kingsland Road in Shoredtich for a wonderful evening of inspiring talks and we have now reached full capacity. The wonderful venue, the Geffrye Museum will be buzzing with 200 plus people! As a reminder about what is happening on 12 May at the Geffrye Museum -  This time around we have the theme "Home". It will totally up to the presenters interpretations of what they talk about - what "Home" means to them. With housing numbers and social housing a key concern for England's future; what the term "Home" really means is most definitely a personal perspective. Everyone has a different idea and varying experience of "Home", depending on where it is, who owns it, and what they do in it. Also, we think Home is topical subject for the month of May, given the mayoral election will have just taken place on 5 May 2016. ‘Home’ - a place where you long to go back to, longed to leave. Is it house, a yurt, a caravan or are you just a long way away from it. It is the one global thing we all share, no matter what our race, income or religion, we all want a place we can call ‘Home’. Further the venue of the Geffrye Museum - the Museum of the Home, which explores the home from 1600 to the present day has also influenced the choice of this theme. We can't wait to see you there! Claire and Brogan Pecha Kucha London
