A Chorus Walks into a Bar: How David Bowie's Death Happened to Birth a Musical Community

BY KATE SOKOLOFF
@ VOL 26 ON JUN 18, 2018

Twice a month, a Portland, ORE bar transforms into a drop-in alt/indie sing-along backed by a live band. A non-chorus chorus, the OK Chorale PDX is like drive-through group karaoke meets bar trivia night: people can come or go at any time, the band’s packed with rotating musicians from Blind Pilot to the Eels, and no one cares what you sound like. The motto: "we're just OK." Some people come to relax and socialize, others to sing without making a commitment, and some even call it their “church.” How did this happen? Why now? Why does it work? You can thank David Bowie.

The Fascinating House of David: Whiskers in Paradise

BY CHRIS SERIANO
@ VOL 16 ON MAR 28, 2019

Chris Siriano is a historian who will shed light on the fascinating story of the religious colony founded in Benton Harbor in 1903. The House of David entertained the nation for over three-quarters of a century, and made a rural southwestern Michigan county into an economic powerhouse while waiting for the world to end. Their members weren’t allowed to have sex, eat meat, drink alcohol, or own personal property. To this day, people talk about how fun they were.

David Pollard at PKN Honolulu

We liked architect David Pollard's presentation at PechaKucha Night in Tokyo back in January so much that we even posted about it here at PechaKucha Daily. Dave not only brought his slightly modified presentation to PKN Honolulu last week (click on through to see the video), he has this to say on the prospect of "PKN tourism": PKN would be a great way to travel around the world....I wonder who holds the record for the most venues presented out of all the contributors? My guess would be PKN founders Mark and Astrid.

TABlog Interviews David Pollard

David Pollard of the "Happy Soil Project" -- we previously covered his PechaKucha Night presentation in Tokyo -- is interviewed over at TABlog. From the intro piece: Something very unusual happened when David Pollard started his presentation at Pecha Kucha Night Vol.58 in January. The background noise of people milling and talking at the bar stopped. Total silence descended. It was something about the first pictures that dominated the screen – a man in a forest with a small structure made out of twigs and branches, a structure natural but also unmistakably a house. It was a “home” in the truest sense of the word. David Pollard’s sincere, straightforward delivery also helped. It was so unusual that even Astrid Klein, co-founder of Pecha Kucha, said how surprised and impressed she was.
