Here she explains how a desire for a phone case that wasn't disgustingly plastic led to her crafting her own fabric phone pouches and selling them to like-minded souls around the world on Etsy, and later digressing into making jewelry from old silver spoons to supply galleries far and wide.

Japanese Wood Crafts

In a short story across the world, Yukiko Izumi tells us how she picked up a keen interest in the japanese wood craftsmanship called "kumiko".

The audience is taken through some beautiful examples and the culture surrounding the art, before finally discussing how to keep it all alive for the next generation.

In this evening's break period, people were even lucky enough to get to try it hands-on, as Yukiko had brought some lovely samples!

In "The York Arts Barge" from PechaKucha Night York Vol. 8 Marcia Mackey and Christian Topman discuss their project that aims to convert a floating river barge into a dedicated arts centre, filling a need for which York currently lacks. Here they share their vision and inspirations for the barge, the positive impact it will have on the community, and the challenges they face in hosting art on the River Ouse.

Rural Arts Activism

In honor of International Day of Rural Women: "These days, arts and artists are mostly urban, this is not news, but whenever things are brought from the wilderness to the country, to the city, they are brought to make a point." In "Rural Arts Activism" from PechaKucha Night Halifax Vol. 21, Associate Professor at NSCAD University Karin Cope presents the many creative opportunities in Halifax to explore the arts to enhance the lives of the members of her rural community.  Karen is a poet, sailor, photographer, videographer, writer, activist, and blogger. Her publications include scholarly works (Passionate Collaborations: Learning to Live with Gertrude Stein,) popular histories (Casting a Legend: The Story of the Lunenburg Foundry), poetry (What we’re doing to stay afloat), short stories, and substantial blogs. A founding member of Art and Activism at NSCAD, Cope is also a community activist on the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia.

Call for Speakers

Pecha Kucha Malden is looking for speakers for the inaugural Pecha Kucha night taking place September 21, 2018 at The Gallery in Malden. Speakers give quick presentations that include 20 images shown for 20 seconds each for a total of six minutes and forty seconds. Topics should be aligned with the them Art and Innovation. The talk can be on scientific or technological research/discoveries, artistic breakthroughs, or anything disrupting the status quo within the arts or incorporating the arts as a communication channel or way to communicate elements of the innovation.
