Why Did the Famous Person Play with the Glue?

PRESENTED ON MAY 11, 2019
IN BATON ROUGE @ VOL 12

So maybe you went to school with someone famous, and maybe he made a fool of himself one day in shop class. You might tell the story over dinner and at parties for decades, honing your delivery. But what's the point? What purpose does the anecdote really serve? You may not find out until late in life, and when you do find out, you may come to understand the healing power of story. Or, at least, that's how it happened for Angus Woodward

BY KIM YUHL

Stories happen in every kitchen, where recipes and family folklore are passed down from one generation to the next. We are surrounded by stories told through film, literature and music that comfort and inspire us. Stories help us communicate our beliefs while hoping others will embrace them. Kim Yuhl believes that this is why stories matter.

The Yoga of Storytelling

BY MARY ROBERTS
@ VOL 3 ON JAN 18, 2018

Isak Dinesen, the Danish writer, once said: “To be a person is to have a story to tell.” And a famous yogi once said that yoga is not about doing a bunch of postures well, it’s about the exploration and discovery of who we are. Mary Roberts shares that storytelling and practicing yoga share the common quality of self-inquiry. Without it, it’s just another story about our crazy family or a deep stretch to open the hip flexors. If we are to do either practice well, we must decide if we are willing to ask the hard questions or move past the fear of falling. It’s the only way it all makes sense.
