The PechaKucha Truth

PRESENTED ON AUG 20, 2016
IN WILLIAMSBURG @ VOL 15

Williamsburg organizer Dale Weiss asked his Facebook friends to send in some randon pictures, and Dale would see if he could make a story out of the images. Once he recieved the images, he realized the truth of PechaKucha was still out there, and needed exploring. (Apologies to Astrid on the national origin, but those ancient alien astronaut theorists do sloppy research).

Half-a-PechaKucha

BY ENZO SZETU-PRICE
@ VOL 3 ON MAY 08, 2015

It is a traiditon that PechaKucha city hosts have their offspring take part. To ease Steve Price's son, Enzo (aged 8) in to the PechaKucha fold we agreed to break the other tradition and allow Enzo to do just half a PechaKucha talk. SO here is Enzo in ten slides.

Learning to Speak: Poetry as Pursuit of Truth

BY LAURIE ANN GUERRERO
@ VOL 20 ON DEC 01, 2015

"This poem is an ode to every hard-working artist who knows the joy of struggle from which their art comes."

In Learning to Speak: Poetry as Pursuit of Truth from PechaKucha Night San Antonio Vol. 20, poet laureate, Laurie Ann Guerrero looks back at her ancestors’ history of labor and struggle as art, a legacy of poets, musicians, and painters whose artistry was a way to map and ultimately transcend the world. Art, she says, is a pursuit of truth. It was her ancestor’s many generations of that pursuit that ultimately gave her the privilege and position of being asked to make art: the maker, not the object. Through poetry, Guerrero invites us to share in that space of openness, vulnerability and ultimately grace.

Knowing the importance of community involvement to improve local biodiversity, Kristina has led the Backyard Mistletoe Project for the last two years. This project has successfully seen over 16 thousand native, locally rare mistletoe seeds sown by our community in backyards all over Christchurch. In this PechaKucha, Kristina highlights the importance of science behind conservation by telling the story of pollination decline and community efforts.

The Truth About Lies

BY MARTIN ATKINSON
@ SCIENCE FOR EUROPE, SCIENCE FOR ME, POWERED BY PECHAKUCHA ON MAY 17, 2019

It might seem like fake news is a problem of the modern world, but there's nothing new about the art of the lie. Politicians have always lied and will always lie. And there have always been forces that try to fight disinformation. In this talk, JRC researcher Martin Atkinson explains what science and technology can do to detect liars and how these tools are used to fight disinformation in the EU.
