Physicist, Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Knoxville

The Not-So-Secrets of Oak Ridge

“When I tell people what I do, they often say ‘oh, you must not be able to tell us anything about it, it must be top secret’. That is totally not true.”

In The Not-So-Secrets of Oak Ridge from PechaKucha Night Knoxville’s 17th volume, Alice Taylor provides some insight into what physicists are up to at the Lab. Most people in Knoxville know that some sort of science is happening in Oak Ridge, but they often don’t know what it's about and how it might one day impact their lives. She explains how the huge new facility - the Spallation Neutron Source -  helps explain weird materials like ferromagnets and superconductors. We enter the world of quantum mechanics to explain how we investigate the tiny, microscopic electrons which ultimately make a magnet stick to your fridge.

QED Comedy Laboratory

@ VOL 17 ON NOV 12, 2015

"We do this by putting on an unique show every week. Each week is an different experiment with a different structure, different form, different set of rules."

In QED Comedy Laboratory from PechaKucha Night Knoxville Vol.17, Matt Chadourne introduces an interesting comedy club. QED Comedy Laboratory is his experimental comedy show in Knoxville, TN, created in 2014, featuring a different theme every week, combining stand-up, improv, sketch, music, etc.

This was "PechaKucha of the Day" on Thursday, June 16th, 2016.

Looking for a National Park

@ VOL 26 ON JUL 05, 2016

Artists partnership Haworth Hayhoe like to celebrate overlooked patches of land in urban settings by constructing National Parks in them. In Looking for a National Park from PechaKucha Night Coventry Vol. 26, the artists talk about their commission for City Arcadia, which constructs a National Park in Coventry, complete with canyon, coal seam and river teeming with un-noticed flora and fauna. They encourage us to look afresh at the spaces we so often overlook, and explore what status and pride of place a label like 'National Park' confers.

University of Tennessee Governor's Chair for Energy and Urbanism

@ VOL 19 ON MAY 12, 2016

What can we do together that we can't do individually? This is the
question that serves to unite the efforts of UT College of Architecture
and Design, Skidmore Owings and Merrill, and ORNL as partners in
the Governor's Chair for Energy and Urbanism. Based in the
downtown FabLab and taught in conjunction with Phil Enquist and
others from SOM and ORNL, the Governor's Chair studios challenge
students to tackle tough design problems. One such challenge is the
architectural application of additive manufacturing or 3D printing. In
the spring of 2015 a graduate architecture studio was tasked with
developing an understanding of the opportunities and limitations of
this new technology. These findings foregrounded the design and
construction of the AMIE prototype. More akin to natural processes
like seashell growth than familiar construction, the process of
designing and building AMIE has created a platform for global
leadership in this emerging field for UT, SOM, and ORNL.

Manhattan Project 2.0, or One Thing Donald Trump Taught Me About Architecture

@ VOL 19 ON MAY 12, 2016

In this presentation, Mark Stanley uses Donald Trump as an avatar for exploring other contingencies for architecture in the 21st Century. Though the lens of two of his favorite architectures, One Wilshire Tower and The Large Hadron Collider, he projects his future speculative design work onto Oak Ridge National Lab.

Designing a Laboratory: Art, Architecture, and the Founding of Fermilab

@ VOL 5 ON NOV 10, 2016

"The sculpture that straddles the lab's entrance appears symmetrical when viewed from below but asymmetrical from all over views, reflecting the view of broken symmetry that is crucial in modern physics."

Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory looks like no other science lab on Earth—thanks to the vision of founding director Robert Wilson and artist Angela Gonzales. Under their aesthetic direction, architecture, sculpture, color, and design combined to produce a lab that was revolutionary for its time. In Designing a Laboratory: Art, Architecture, and the Founding of Fermilab from PechaKucha Night Batavia Vol. 5Katie Yurkewicz shows off another side of the legendary physics lab.

This was "PechaKucha of the Day" on Wednesday, February 2nd, 2017.
