The Creative Evolution of the Colouring Book Lady


"If anybody would ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up I would say 'I want to go to the Royal College of Art in Kensington Gore.' I had no idea where Kensington Gore was. I didn't care where it was, I just wanted to go there. I had a book about from the Royal College of Art and I loved the people in it, and I wanted to be one of those people."

In The Creative Evolution of the Coloring Book Lady from PechaKucha Night Bexhill-on-Sea Vol. 1Mel Elliott takes us on a journey from her childhood dream to attend The Royal College of Art, to an early project for an advertising agency, to self publishing a Kate Moss colouring books and beyond. She continues to grow her business "I Love Mel" and practice, developing a range of products including temporary tattoos, t-shirts and card games.

To write and to be read, electronic media is the best option now a days. This reality provides of a new dimension to the paper format. Selva Hernandez opts for a different way of making books. With Ediciones Acapulco she promotes hand in hand distribution through direct sales or social media. The idea of colaborating directly with the author in the production and design of the book result in the creation of objects in which the typography is intrinsically related to its form.

Colour Decoded

A surgery removing a tumour along with half of Carly Blackman's thyroid in 2012 was the beginning of a 2-year journey of researching, writing and designing her book called Colour Decoded. This is a book written for artists and designers explaining the science behind colour in a way a "right-brained" individual can easily understand. Furthermore it discusses how colour has a massive impactive on our hormones, body and behaviours. Her exploration with colour tries to bridge the two worlds of Art and Science, which have been isolated from each other in our present day education system.

In I AM a Bag Lady  at PechaKucha Night Madison Vol. 20Lesley Sager shares the stories of the Kenyan women whom have inspired her while volunteering in Africa. They are smart, creative, and hardworking but what they do not know is that they are artisans. With their beautiful hand crafted bags, they have woven their ways into Lesley's heart and have uplifted their community with their creativity and passion for education. 

Lesley is a Faculty Associate and Interior Designer for the University of Wisconsin, Madison and also owns a NPGO called MGS.
