Kendra Denny reflects on her experiences with encaustic painting, an ancient painting technique done with wax. Originally used as a method to seal ships, encaustic painting now serves as a fusion of contemporary fine art and traditional craft. 

Sign painter and designer Joe Swec speaks on his life, his projects, and his aging (or flourishing?) medium. He discusses the typographic elements found in his work, the challenges he confronted, and the renaissance of sorts that he believes is occuring in reference to his style. 

Dougie Kerr is considered a Toronto legend, and he has been painting signs since the 60s. When he first moved to Canada in the 70s, his first job was painting totem poles. He is now one of the two only sign-makers at Honest Ed's, the most iconic department store in Toronto. He does a variety of in-store signage, sometimes producing 40-50 hand-painted signs a day. 

Matt Culver's focuses on the University of Tennessee School of Architecture Fab Lab. While this facility may be similar to fabrication shops at other design schools, Matt firmly believes that the University of Tennessee School of Architecture Fab Lab is uniquely poised to draw upon a regional legacy of craft. This potential opportunity can help set it apart from other facilities.

Public speaking might not be their strong point but these Travelling Sign Painters have gathered a small bead of success in their little business.  Mixing up their DMD education and love of graphic design and illustration they gathered an idea and it blossomed.  From a little cart being pulled from behind a 10-speed bike and buzzing around the city just making art and collaborting.  These two have definitely got a long way to go yet.  

Ealish recently moved back to the Isle of Man with her husband Charles and together they have set up Sneaky Weasel, designers, makers and sign painters, who create all forms of signage, mural and decorative work. Everything is created, built and painted by hand. Ealish completed the Art Foundation Course at UCM (formerly Isle of Man College) and then studied on the Printed Textiles and Surface Pattern Design at Leeds College of Art.  Progressing then on to the MA Fashion Textile Practices at the University of Huddersfield.
