Salty Girl Seafood--Driving Change Through Innovation


Norah has worked in and on the water for most of her life, having spent countless days at sea and working in fisheries all over the world. She holds a BS in Marine Biology from the College of Charleston and a MESM from UCSB's Bren School of Environmental Science & Management. She has worked on both inshore and offshore fisheries projects at the state and federal level. Her master’s thesis focused on finding innovative solutions to problems facing the Galápagos lobster fishery. Norah’s work has taken her around the world, studying and presenting in Australia, Europe, Alaska, and Latin America. Upon receiving her master’s degree she managed an international, multi-stakeholder fisheries and marine spatial planning project. In 2014, she co-founded Salty Girl Seafood, a sustainable seafood company, with the aim of driving positive change in the seafood industry. Salty Girl was awarded Best Women Owned Business of 2015 by the Pacific Coast Business Times, and has been featured in Forbes, NPR, and The Huffington Post. Norah is a 2016 recipient of the Spirit of Entrepreneurship Award.

You're probably thinking about cookies. Cookies are a Girl Scout's first introduction to entrepreneurship. Allison Martinson introduces them to engineering. At Girl Scouts of Wisconsin - Badgerland, Girl Scouts are learning to use their dreams and ideas to make, build, design, create, dissect, and analyze. Badgerland's program introduces girls to code, robotics, entomology, and rocketry, connects girls to inspiring adult volunteers, and encourages girls to use STEM to make the world a better place.

Sometimes rules are meant to be broken. We abandoned the rule book for this free-form, "20x20 ish" team presentation, Champions for Change, at PechaKucha Buffalo Vol. 19Elizabeth Walsh, Professor at the University at Buffalo School of Architecture and Planning, shared her mic with a team of members of the Champion for Change program. Champions for Change (an initiative of One Region Forward in Buffalo) is a community innovation laboratory that integrates university and community resources to ignite bright ideas and inspired leadership for a flourishing region. In this celebration of community change-makers, one presenter even broke out into song. We guarantee this will make you smile!
