Empowering Street Artists, Activating Citizens

BY MARIO RUEDA
@ PECHAKUCHA URBAN INNOVATION MONTH ON APR 01, 2014

"Shouldn't we all pay more attention to the space around us?"

In Empowering Street Artists, Activating Citizens from PechaKucha Urban Innovation Month Lisbon, Mario Rueda presents the importance of street artists within our local communities.

Many think of vandalism and graffiti when they hear the words "street art", but people like Mario see the city in a very different light. Public spaces are taken over by advertisements and corporations, but the artists, performers, and musicians who share their creativity and seek to delight fellow citizens are treated like criminals.

Book a Street Artist is a platform which seeks to empower artists and give back the city to citizens.

The Streets Belong to Us

BY MATEUS BAGATINI
@ BRAZILIAN LIFESTYLE POWERED BY PECHAKUCHA ON SEP 16, 2015

"We can take over the streets. We can have fun there because the city belongs to us."

In "The Streets Belong to Us" from Tokyo's Brazilian Lifestyle Powered by PechaKucha, content creator Mateus Bagatini shines the spotlight on Brazilian street party culture, but not the carnival kind with which we're all familiar! Exhausted and bored with the exclusive and over-priced club scene, a new generation of partiers have decided to take the club to the street, hosting DJs and dancers under bridges, in the parks, or even in once-abandoned commercial spaces, bringing with them more people, cheap booze, the authorisation of the city, and well ... what looks like a damn good time. Not just simply focussed on cutting loose, the parties have taken on numerous forms, often with a social message and have successfully demonstrated being an agent of change for the betterment of cities. As a citizen-driven culture, at parties in Brazil's public spaces everyone is invited ...after all the city belongs to us!

Watch this Space: Christchurch Street Art

BY LINDSAY CHAN
@ VOL 29 ON OCT 24, 2016

"The city landscape is constantly changing... it's impossible for one person to do it alone."

In Watch this Space: Christchurch Street Art at PechaKucha Night Vol. 29, Lindsay Chan shares her discovery of numerous murals popping up around the city of Christchurch, New Zealand. In response to the recent natural disaster, many local artists have taken to the streets to create a lively atmosphere through adversity and art. Lindsay hopes that the creation of an app will bring her community together one mural at a time.

Artists Were Made for People

BY BEN BAUGHAM
@ VOL 37 ON DEC 13, 2018

Boy Blue (Ben Baugham) is a new wave visual communicator, and a street performer hell-bent on bringing the artist (not just art), back into social relevance. He has spent the past few years creating art in public and bringing visual excellence to the most bizarre locations. From construction sites to the office place, Blue has been hired all over the east coast to talk with and engage with people as he creates his works; thus, allowing people of any class, race or creed to feel a genuine connection with artists.
