Getting it Just Right

BY DAVID KERNICK
@ VOL 2 ON JUN 26, 2014

As a local surf life-saver and regular ski-paddler, David Kernick has spent many years on the beautiful local waterways or surfing the beaches. His view of the local area comes from a different perspective to most as he regularly paddles in the late afternoon light and has seen many spectacular sunsets. This passion for water and low light is reflected in much of his photographic work and he enjoys the peacefulness and serenity of shooting nature, water, and landscapes. David also loves the social interaction of portrait photography and watching his subjects develop in confidence, capturing their personalities and in particular seeing the smile on their faces when they see the final product.

"Presentation of the Day" on September 15, 2014.

Ocean of Art

BY SCOTT DENHOLM
@ VOL 21 ON MAY 18, 2017

"To me, my art now tells a story between nature and humanity, a push and pull, love and betrayal type of visual dialogue that exposes my emotional connections with the ocean."

In Ocean of Art from Pechakucha Night Sunshine Coast Vol. 21, we hear from Scott Denholm, a contemporary ocean artist. His art focuses on the ocean and explores the emotional relationships that we have with it. Through his life as a surfer and conservationist, he has sought to capture semi-abstract moments that resonate with people from all walks of life. His paintings are also created with environmentally friendly art materials. In his presentation, he wants to focus on these emotional relationships and explore them through his new series, "Elevation".

Sustainable Surfboards

BY COBUS JOUBERT
@ VOL 45 ON AUG 15, 2017

From plastic bags to pesticides - most of the waste we produce on land eventually reaches the oceans, either through deliberate dumping or from run-off through drains and rivers. Surfboards are 100% toxic, but there are sustainable surf craft options that can replace these toxic products. Cobus Joubert explains.

Mermaid's Coin

BY HANNAH KATARSKI
@ VOL 22 ON JUL 26, 2018

(Apologies for no audio)

Through Mermaid’s Coin, I combine my two passions, surfing and making, to create limited edition artworks and objects evocative of the beach, ocean and surf culture. It is a one-woman, Fremantle-based business creating ‘surf art’ that is vibrant, retro and fun.

I have always been a maker. When travelling around the world in 2010 on a 'surfari', I was inspired by artists in California and Hawaii, who use their medium to express their love of, and relationship with the ocean.
