Magic Words

PRESENTED ON JUN 29, 2016
IN TOKYO @ VOL 137

"Words are really powerful, and if we’re going to use them to express the people we are and the feelings that we have, let’s make them count!"

In Magic Words from PechaKucha Night Tokyo Vol. 137, Hengtee Lim looks at how words inspire new ideas, create a shared experience, and foster understanding. Lim argues that there's a power in words and the way we use them to express ourselves and tell stories.

This was "PechaKucha of the Day" on Friday, July 22nd, 2016.

Nottingham’s UNESCO ‘City of Literature’ Bid

BY PIPPA HENNESSEY
@ VOL 2 ON JUN 20, 2014

Pippa Hennessey has not been writing for long and always felt like the odd one out in classes or meetings where she meets people who have been writing since they were foetuses. Her tendency (even though she always hated the stuff) is towards writing poetry. She is a member of Nottingham Writers’ Studio, where she is on the board as the Project Delivery Coordinator and is the Secretary of the Nottingham Poetry Society. I’m on the steering committees for theNottingham Festival of Words and the Beeston Poets.

BY SCOTT BAYTOSH

According to Scott Baytosh, Head of School at Alexandria Country Day School, learning and magic are close cousins-- they both engender wonder, curiosity, and fascination. How can educators create these experiences? He suggests that we can look to teacher-archetypes in popular culture, such as Ms. Frizzle, Mary Poppins, and Professor Lupin, as role models and practical guides for keeping the magic in learning.

the words in my head

BY KIM TOSCANO HOLMES
@ VOL 3 ON APR 02, 2019

We begin with chaos, the incessant drumming of a restless mind. A journey through emotion follows – feeling to the nth degree. Deconstruction seeks order in the confusion. Negotiation hatches a sense of reconciliation. Words emerge, carrying a fresh understanding and myriad new questions. This, for me, is writing.
