New York: City on a Grid

BY GERARD KOEPPEL
@ VOL 7 ON DEC 04, 2015

Actor David Duchovny (!) says of Gerard Koeppel's new book: “ I’ve spent most of my life walking the straight lines of the world’s greatest city, and have never thought to ask: Is this a different shape from other cities, and if so, why, and who did it? Koeppel’s book answers these questions, in an easygoing, good-humored manner, with interesting facts unearthed on nearly every page. This is one of those books you always wished would be written, and here it is. Indispensable for anyone interested in the history of New York and cities generally, and bound to fuel cocktail conversations up, down, and across the city for years to come.”

Listen here for a whirlwind history of NY's grid as it develops!

Gerard Koeppel writes history, mostly New York related, but also in anything from magazines and journals to historical signage in city parks. He was also a captain of a charter sailboat, an awful law student, a licensed hack (out of a Greenwich Village taxi garage), and then, for many years, a radio reporter/writer/editor/producer, mostly with CBS News.

Sparks: The Magic of the Grid

BY ALEX HALBLEIB
@ VOL 5 ON MAY 19, 2016

"The whole idea of being connected in some way, shape, or form, through this system that people set up, is so we can actually help each other do better things."

In Sparks: The Magic of the Grid from PechaKucha Night St. Joseph Vol. 5, electrical engineer at Whirlpool Corporation, Alex Halbleib distills an explanation of the mechanics (and magic) and the ubiquitous grid that brings our homes energy every day and night. Originally from Louisville, Kentucky, (that's pronounced "Loo-ih-vil", without the "S"!) Alex is currently working in the advanced engineering where he hopes to make the world's connection just a little bit stronger.

This was "PechaKucha of the Day" on Wednesday, June 15th, 2016.

Sensibility of the Grid

BY CLAESSON KOIVISTO RUNE
@ DESIGNART 2017 OPENING EVENT PECHAKUCHA NIGHT TOKYO SPECIAL! OCTOBER 16 (MONDAY) AT OMOTESANDO HILLS! ON OCT 16, 2017

The internationally acclaimed Swedish architectural partnership, Claesson Koivisto Rune bring their multi-disciplinary approach to Japan, this time to DESIGNART, debuting a new series of printed works that delve into the repetition, proportion, and artistic sensibility of the grid. Derived from the artists’ passion, discussions, research and experience of architecture after close to a quarter of a century in the profession, these works embody their synthesis of design and art, abstracting from skyscraper façades something other than architecture ...other than art ...in a search for the essence of the grid.

The Grid of the Mind

BY MANE TATOULIAN
@ VOL 31 ON JUN 29, 2019

What is the relationship between Design and the Universe? Is there a more deep and essential reason in the significance of design? Design is not an artificial discipline: it is a natural human activity. The seek of designing, systematizing and organizing is nothing but a human essential need - coming back to our essence: We were designed (by a design) to design. Mane Tatoulian provides some insight.
