Artist Sandow Birk work includes painitngs and woodblock prints. He is influenced by nineteen century European romantic painting which he layers with hip-hop culture and his art evolves from fictional history to real history painting. His themes are current events, the war in Iraq. His last project was a creation of illuminated manuscript based on traditional islamic manuscripts.

Hand-Painted Signs in the 21st Century

Dougie Kerr is considered a Toronto legend, and he has been painting signs since the 60s. When he first moved to Canada in the 70s, his first job was painting totem poles. He is now one of the two only sign-makers at Honest Ed's, the most iconic department store in Toronto. He does a variety of in-store signage, sometimes producing 40-50 hand-painted signs a day.

Artist Michelle Vaughan discusses copies, genetics, history, and portait paintings. She goes into depth on the portraits Diego Velazquez was commissioned to create of the family of Spanish King Philip IV -- a family notorious for in-breeding. Michelle has created digital works of art that tell stories about the nature of replication, family genetics, and painterly techniques.

In the days before Knoxville's urban revitalization, the Metro Pulse weekly paper became a catalyst for conversations which had a positive effect on the city's future. Now Knoxville is primed for the next wave of success beyond downtown and yet there is silence when those conversations are needed most. The core staff of the former Metro Pulse is launching a new paper. As the largest independent, locally-focused paper with the most experienced staff in town, the Knoxville Mercury will facilitate new conversations about our future, provide the city with investigative journalism, give voice to underserved communities and illuminate the region's history and unique culture. This presentation will provide insights on the development of paper and share some sneak peaks of the design that will be nearing completion in mid-February.

Art History at HoMA School

Gary Liu is a lecturer in the Department of Art and Art History at UH Manoa, and an instructor of art history at the Honolulu Museum of Art School.

You all know about the wide array of expressive art practices taught in the studios at HoMA School, but perhaps it comes as news that the school has also been recently expanding its world of art history offerings too, something a class at an art museum is uniquely equipped to do. Using the example of Chinese ink paintings recently discussed in such classes, this presentation offers a glimpse into the insight gained through HoMA School’s art history lectures, discussions, gallery and vault visits, and film screenings.

From seven foster care placements, to becoming the first principal of a dropout recovery alternative school to be named a National Urban School of Excellence before age 40, Phillitia has always been resilient and determined to make every moment count.  Phillitia was recently awarded The Montgomery County Artist Opportunity Grant to turn her book the Death of a Lie into a Play.
