Adjacent to Detroit’s lively Campus Martius Park, the 1001 Woodward Plaza site was perfectly positioned to serve as a node in a growing network of human-scaled projects reinvigorating Downtown Detroit. Laura Walker and her team have transformed the plaza, and re-appropriated from a private area into an inclusive, public space, impacting the urban neighborhood by supporting activity within the greater community context.

Kate Malone and Stephen Pey worked together to create a building with hand made glazed tiles and design. After many trials and errors of cracking ceramic tiles, the finished product was to make something sexy but have the sense of community in the finished building. Which makes the hard work all worth while.

In Community Participation and Architecture, from PechaKucha Night New Orleans, Vol. 17, architect Mary Gilmore, shares her master’s thesis on Community Participation and Architecture. Her belief is that if people participated in the design and construction of a building, not only will they become stake holders in the process, but also learn something. To put her thesis into practice, Mary moved to India and then later to Mali, West Africa with the Peace Corps. Now as a practicing architect here in the states, she is has rediscovered the notion of community participation and architecture.

Design-Build Education: Creating a New Education Center for Beardsley Community Farm

Students and faculty from the University of Tennessee’s College of Architecture and Design will present on the benefits of design-build education as illustrated by an innovative new building being created for Beardsley Community Farm in Knoxville—a non-profit urban demonstration farm promoting food security and sustainable agriculture. Design-build education through architectural design courses at UT enabled making a building that reinforces Beardsley’s mission. The new structure will operate as a teaching tool helping farm staff and volunteers more effectively engage the public about the benefits of local sustainable farming. It also creates significant public spaces for the benefit of the community at large.
