The Portraiture Paradox

@ VOL 2 ON APR 11, 2019

Ben Frisch has been an artist since the age of 2. He sold his first drawing to a classmate in grade 6 and he was hooked. Art as a career can be a challenging path to take especially as a portrait artist and that pursuit dominated his 20’s. Although Ben had many ups and downs, that dream never came to fruition. His passion for portraiture was put on a shelf and now at 36, he has not made art for a long time. It’s sad to think that dream may have died but in hindsight, Ben now sees the paradox that plagued him. This is the story of Ben's career as a portrait artist and why he was doomed to fail.

More Than Meets the Eye

@ VOL 2 ON APR 11, 2019

I recently had the pleasure of volunteering on a very special project with the Alzheimer Society of Grey-Bruce. The More Than Meets the Eye series features 10 portraits of people living with dementia and highlights notable stories from their lives well lived.

This presentation is all about my experience in photographing the participants, working with them and their care partners, hearing their stories. I’ll share more about how this project changed how I see and speak about people living with dementia, and how the project aims to help others see how there is much more to the participants and people like them.

This presentation will be various aerial pictures I have taken from the Cockpit during my flights. I have flown over many places and seen so many different things from my seat and hope to bring that to life in this presentation.

How Collingwood could become Biketown, Ontario, and what that could mean for our community

@ VOL 2 ON APR 11, 2019

Collingwood is an active community, there is no doubt about it.  With access to skiing, hiking, biking, watersports and more, getting outdoors and being active is in our community's DNA.  Every day you can see people out enjoying the abundance of nature that Georgian Bay Living has to offer. And while cycling for recreation is one of the most popular activities in Collingwood, few people consider a bike as a viable option for transportation in the community, even though every trip that starts and ends in town is easily done in 25 minutes or less on a bike.  Justin will share his experience and expertise on what essential ingredients Collingwood is missing to become a leader in promoting cycling for utilitarian purposes, and will talk about what benefits a community can realize when it prioritizes the mobility of people to reconnect them with their neighbourhoods and their environment. He'll challenge attendees to help to build the kind of community they want to see and show how with a few relatively simple actions, Collingwood could become Ontario's best community to ride a bike and reap all of the rewards that would come along with that title.
