Title: 1968 – The Year that Shattered Akron

@ VOL 10 ON FEB 09, 2018

Akron has been having the conversation on race since 1851. Few young people are aware that following the assassination of Martin Luther King in 1968, Akron experienced the violence that infected so many American cities – disillusioned young black men rioting, attacking the businesses of white merchants, confronting police. In Akron, a thousand National Guard troops quelled the disturbances after 6 nights of rioting. Black leaders came together to respond. A commission was formed to assess the reasons for the violence. Dave Lieberth offers a thorough overview of the mayhem and discrimination in Akron in 1968.

Created by Ilenia Pezzaniti, #iwokeuplikethis is a photo series started in 2015 which promotes women's self-esteem. #iwokeuplikethis is about redefining beauty in our own individual terms and owning our definitions. It is about creating peace within the self and teaching our our offspring the same values. It is about inspiring all genders to remove the stereotypical toxic ideas of beauty and the things we do to achieve such heights, and instead see to love our own truths and the truths of others.

Mentorship, Part 2

@ VOL 10 ON FEB 09, 2018

A while ago, James Hardy presented at PKN Akron focusing on the mentors who had left him far too soon.  When PKN Akron asked James to come present those slides again at a special retrospective, he realized that his original slide deck profiled only male mentors. In doing this, James had only revealed a portion of his story, so for PechaKucha Night Akron Vol. 10, James pays tribute to the women who shaped his life, and shares the importance of female leadership in society.

Your Brand Is Bullsh!t

@ VOL 10 ON FEB 09, 2018

All that glitters is not gold and this is never more true than in a day when online profiles, avatars, and "branding" has taken over how we package ourselves. While the world becomes obsessed with creating "personal brands," Kevin Smith argues that the true worth of a brand is in its dependability, and in order to achieve this, we have to understand our leverage points then double down on who we are.

"Furnishing Eternity"

@ VOL 10 ON FEB 09, 2018

David Giffels grew up fascinated by his father’s dusty, tool-strewn workshop and the countless creations it inspired. So when he enlisted his eighty-one-year-old dad to help him build his own casket, he thought of it mostly as an opportunity to spend time together. But the unexpected deaths of his mother and, a year later, his best friend, coupled with the dawning realization that his father wouldn’t be around forever for such offbeat adventures—and neither would he—led to a harsh confrontation with mortality and loss.
